Chargers vs. Chiefs Fantasy Quarterback Preview

Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City has reshaped itself around the addition of Kenneth Walker, which has helped Mahomes a lot.

He is playing under center at a career-high rate (41.8%), which has led to a career-best play-action rate (35.9%).

Using play action, Mahomes is 32 of 46 (69.6%) for 407 yards (8.8 Y/A) with 4 touchdowns.

Mahomes was the QB20 (15.9 points) and QB13 (17.0 points) in his two games heading into the bye because the Chiefs have a larger share of rushing yardage than in previous seasons, but Mahomes has thrown multiple touchdown passes in every game.

Attached to a home favorite with a solid team total, Mahomes is still a solid QB1 option, but there could be some high-end ceiling limitations.

The Chiefs have wide receiver injuries to work through, and the Chargers offense is brutal, which could limit strong pushback.

The Chargers also haven't been a terrible pass defense in the past few weeks.

They have allowed 12.2 passing points per game (8th), one QB1 scoring week, and no quarterbacks higher than QB10 in weekly scoring.

There is nothing to hide in the peripherals, as they are mostly middling in efficiency.

The Chargers are allowing a 65.4% completion rate (17th), 7.3 Y/A (19th), and a 4.9% touchdown rate (19th).

Derwin James, Donte Jackson, and Bud Dupree are all still expected to miss Week 6.

But because the Chargers play slowly (and poorly) on offense, they are facing only 28.2 pass attempts per game (4th fewest).

No quarterback has completed 20 passes against the Chargers since Week 1.

The Chargers have thrown 8.6% below pass-rate expectations (30th), and their opponents have thrown 4.6% below expectations (30th), creating slow-moving game environments.

The Chiefs will throw while building a lead (they are 3.4% over pass-rate expectations), but as we saw in Miami in Week 3, they will also grind teams out now if they are in control.

Justin Herbert

Herbert has yet to post a week higher than QB22 in weekly scoring this far into the season.

There is not much else to say here at this point.

Herbert is playing poorly and not helping himself.

The surrounding core players on the offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end have been injured.

To end last week's game, the Chargers leaned on Theo Wease, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Derius Davis at wide receiver.

They had backups Travis Burke, Logan Taylor, and Alex Harkey on the offensive line.

And Herbert and Mike McDaniel haven't gelled.

Defenses do not even respect this offense right now.

Herbert faces the lowest rate of man coverage (5.7%).

He is blitzed only 24% of the time (27th).

Even so, Herbert has been pressured on 46.9% of his dropbacks (30th) and has taken a hit on a league-high 20.6% of them.

Even when kept clean, Herbert and this passing game are broken.

He has the league's lowest rating without pressure (71.5), completing 65.2% of his passes (30th) for 6.7 Y/A (25th), with a league-high 6.5% interception rate.

Herbert is a back-end QB2.

The Chiefs are fifth in passing points allowed per game (11.7).
