Giants vs. Texans Fantasy Quarterback Preview
C.J. Stroud
Stroud was sharp again on Sunday in London against the Jaguars, completing 24 of 34 passes (70.6%) for 312 yards (9.2 Y/A) with 3 touchdowns and an interception.
Closing the week as the QB5 (23 points), Stroud has scored 20-plus fantasy points in three straight games.
That is only the second time he has done that in his career.
The first came over his second-to-fourth career games played.
Houston has leaned more on the pass because they haven't run effectively.
The Texans have thrown the ball more than expected in each of the past three games.
The pass-catching room looks much better than it did a few weeks ago, and Stroud is in the best stretch of his career since his rookie year.
He is currently posting career marks in success rate (48.6%) and EPA per dropback (0.15).
Stroud has produced 1.0 EPA or more on 26.2% of his dropbacks (10th) while losing 1.0 EPA or worse on 13.2% (6th).
Houston has their highest team total of the season, so we should keep using Stroud as a QB1 option.
The Giants are coming off weird weeks in which they have allowed the second-highest-scoring quarterback in back-to-back games.
In Week 5, Jayden Daniels got over via 103 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
Last week, Tyler Shough only completed 53.3% of his passes for 144 yards (4.8 Y/A), but he threw 3 touchdowns and ran in another.
The Giants have allowed only one passer to reach 200 yards against them this season.
They rank fifth in yards allowed per pass attempt (6.2) and fourth in yards per completion (9.9).
However, they still have a lighter run of Shough, Daniels, Jacoby Brissett, and Cam Ward over the past four weeks.
None of those guys is playing close to Stroud's level right now.
The Giants have also allowed a 6.3% touchdown rate, which is 27th in the league.
They are last in pressure rate (25.6%).
When Stroud has a clean pocket, he averages 8.7 yards per pass attempt (7th) and 12.4 yards per completion (3rd).
Giants QB
J.J. McCarthy will make his first start with the Giants after entering last week's game for an ineffective Jameis Winston.
McCarthy entered the game in the fourth quarter on Sunday, after New Orleans led 34-10 with 11 minutes to go.
McCarthy threw an interception on his first series, then completed 11 of 21 passes (52.4%) for 243 yards (11.6 Y/A) and a touchdown, bringing the game within one score with 2 minutes to play.
He understood the assignment and the game conditions, throwing 10+ yards downfield 41.2% of the time and 20+ yards downfield 29.4% of the time.
Both were the league's highest rates last week.
He completed two 40-plus-yard throws.
He had 1 of those completions all of last season.
McCarthy's 243 yards in one quarter were his third-highest in any game of his career (his career best is 250 yards).
We cannot over-index him hitting big plays in a wonky game script (he still completed only 52.4% of his passes), meaning he is only a viable starter in 2QB formats for gamers forced to fill a void.
Houston continues to allow big plays in the passing game, but we did see them shut down Cam Ward two weeks ago.
At least Houston has mostly been giving up production to quarterbacks we have stocked as good passers.
The Giants have a minuscule team total, and their offensive line is concerning, something you don't want against Houston, despite their struggles.
The Texans are still third in sacks (18).
Jermaine Eluemunor missed last week's game with a calf injury.
Andrew Thomas was forced to leave last week's game after being evaluated for a concussion, but he did get cleared.
Rookie Francis Mauigoa has had a rough start to his rookie season.
He has allowed a team-high 13 pressures, tying him for fifth-most among guards.
