Titans vs. Colts Fantasy Quarterback Preview
Daniel Jones
Jones has yet to close a week higher than QB23 for fantasy purposes.
He is completing 61.4% of his passes (23rd) for 5.8 yards per pass attempt (29th).
He has not thrown 7.0 Y/A in any game this season.
He has a 1.7% touchdown rate (30th).
Only Malik Willis has a lower touchdown rate (1.6%).
Jones averages 0.20 passing points per dropback, ahead of only Willis (0.19), who is at least rushing.
Returning from his Achilles injury, Jones has 25 rushing yards through five games, rushing for a career-low 1.8 yards per rush.
I already tried once this season to give Jones elevation based on the matchup versus Washington, and he crumbled.
Having learned that lesson, Jones is stuck as a QB2 with matchup appeal.
The Titans are 20th in passing points allowed per attempt (0.42), surrendering a 73.9% completion rate (31st) and 7.8 yards per pass attempt (26th).
What has kept them from getting flooded is their 3.4% touchdown rate (10th).
Early this season, teams stopped throwing on them based on game scripts, but their run defense has been so good it has flipped.
The past two teams they have faced (Ravens and Texans) have thrown the ball over pass-rate expectations against them.
This happened last year when they faced the highest pass-rate-over-expectation rate, so it is something to watch.
Cam Ward
Ward has thrown for 200 yards in one game so far, with a high mark of 222 passing yards.
Through five weeks, Ward is the QB27 in passing points per dropback (0.24).
His 5.8 yards per pass attempt is only a few decimal points behind Jones and ahead of only Jacoby Brissett (5.6).
Ward has a 1.9% touchdown rate, ahead of only Jones and Willis.
On throws of 10 or more yards downfield, Ward has completed 40% (18 of 45) of his passes, ranking 29th in the league.
Ward is in a similar spot to Jones.
He is tough to project as a streamer in 1QB formats, making him a matchup-based QB2.
The Colts are allowing 17.5 passing points per game (28th).
They have allowed 8.0 Y/A (29th) and a 5.4% touchdown rate (22nd).
Can Ward take advantage of these things?
The Colts are playing man coverage at the league's third-highest rate (29.2%).
Against man coverage, Ward has completed 51.6% (16 of 31) of his passes (25th) for 4.1 yards per pass attempt (28th).
