Ravens vs. Bills: Preview, Prediction & Best Bets
For the second season in a row, the NFL has the Ravens on the road in primetime in Week 1 against a major AFC contender. Baltimore will try to avenge its AFC divisional-round playoff loss to the Bills.
- Ravens' odds to win the AFC's No. 1 seed: +325
- Bills' odds to win the AFC's No. 1 seed: +225
These teams and their quarterbacks share much in common. Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen were both drafted in 2018, made their NFL debuts that season in the same Week 1 game, and they're the only players to receive first-place MVP votes the last two seasons (and are odds-on favorites for MVP again in 2025). They're both still seeking their first Super Bowl appearance, and both hope to finally get by the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.
However, Jackson's past playoff struggles should not dampen how he led his team in January. Tight end Mark Andrews had a costly fumble and dropped a two-point conversion pass in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's 27-25 loss. The Ravens will likely rely on Andrews this week, too. Their other good tight end, Isaiah Likely, is still injured and unlikely to play Sunday night. But Jackson has Derrick Henry, and he's getting Zay Flowers back as his best wide receiver after he missed the entire playoff run with an injury.
The Ravens also should have a better defense this year than Buffalo. Baltimore added Jaire Alexander (Packers) to the cornerbacks and drafted first-round safety Malaki Starks. The Bills are relying on an older, injury-prone Joey Bosa, and they signed Tre'Davious White back, the corner who's never been the same since his ACL tear on Thanksgiving in 2021.
You also should consider turnover regression for these teams. The Bills have not lost the turnover battle in 22 straight games, the longest streak in NFL history. They have been the only team since 1992 not to lose a fumble all season by anyone except the quarterback, so don't be surprised if the Ravens get a fumble early in this game.
The Bills were +17 in fumble recoveries last season (playoffs included), an absurd figure that helped them have the best turnover differential in the NFL. However, no team since the 1970 merger has led the NFL in back-to-back years in turnover margin. They should regress to the mean, and that should happen to Jackson, too, after throwing just four interceptions in 2024.
But it should be a great matchup and an early statement game for both the AFC and MVP races.
