NFL Betting Lines Week 17: Spreads, Storylines & Things to Know
The NFL's Week 17 schedule is a loaded one, starting with a Thursday triple-header on Christmas, featuring two key Saturday games, as it did last week, and some important games on Sunday and Monday as well.
It kicks off on Christmas with a slate that looked a lot better on paper in May when the schedule came out. Netflix paid a lot of money for two afternoon games that are unlikely to feature any playoff teams in divisional rematches, featuring the Cowboys vs. Commanders and the Lions vs. Vikings. With the injuries to quarterbacks for these teams, we could see Dak Prescott trying to outscore Josh Johnson and Jared Goff trying to outscore Max Brosmer, with J.J. McCarthy's latest injury knocking him out of Sunday's game. The Lions need to win out and for Green Bay to lose out to make the playoffs, coming off a 15-2 season.
On Thursday night, it's going to be the biggest underdog spread the Chiefs (+12.5) have had in a game since they rested their starters in the 2013 finale against the Chargers, Andy Reid's first year with the team. However, the decimated Chiefs (6-9) must host the Broncos, who saw their 11-game winning streak snapped last week at home against Jacksonville. With Gardner Minshew injured in his first start after replacing Patrick Mahomes (ACL), the Chiefs may have to turn to Chris Oladokun as their starting quarterback.
On Saturday, there's a double-header with a 5:00 PM kickoff between the Texans and Chargers. This game should have a playoff atmosphere, as not only is it a January rematch from the wild card round, but both teams are still jockeying for position in the AFC playoffs this year. The Chargers can still win the AFC West by beating Houston and Denver these last two weeks, which would give Justin Herbert a real shot at winning MVP if he plays well against those defenses behind his poor offensive line. But that Houston defense is No. 1 in many categories, and the Texans intercepted Herbert a career-high four times in the playoffs, so this should be a great one to watch as the sneaky best game of the weekend on paper.
On Saturday night, it's another de facto playoff game as the Ravens (7-8) and Packers (9-5-1) could both use the win. However, both lost in prime time in Week 16 after Jordan Love (concussion) and Lamar Jackson (back) left their games before halftime. That's why it's possible we could see Malik Willis (Packers) vs. Tyler Huntley (Ravens) in this matchup if the stars can't go. The Packers have done well in a small sample size of games with Willis under center, while the Ravens have historically struggled (5-12 record) without Jackson. You might expect to see a lot of running backs, Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs, in this one.
In the Sunday afternoon window, the big game features Seattle at Carolina, following both teams' thrilling division wins last week. The Seahawks (12-3) still have a chance to win the NFC West and are in position for the No. 1 seed, but the Panthers have already upset the Packers, Rams, and Buccaneers this year. Bryce Young has led six game-winning drives this season to help Carolina (8-7) have a real shot at winning the NFC South for the first time since 2015. Elsewhere, we'll see if Myles Garrett can set the sack record in Cleveland, where the Steelers have a shot to win the AFC North if they haven't already wrapped it up with a Baltimore loss at Green Bay on Saturday night. The Jaguars can also inch closer to the AFC South by eliminating Philip Rivers and the Colts.
In the late-afternoon window, we only get two games this week. One might help decide the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft between the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants, who both have the worst record (2-13) in the NFL this season. The other is a marquee game and potential Super Bowl 60 preview between the Philadelphia Eagles (10-5) and Buffalo Bills (11-4). These teams played an overtime classic, won 37-34 by the Eagles, in 2023, and their quarterbacks are the masters of the Tush Push touchdown. However, that should be a good one, with the Eagles having clinched the NFC East and the Bills still having an outside shot at winning the AFC East.
On Sunday Night Football, it's a big one in the NFC between the Chicago Bears (11-4) and San Francisco 49ers (11-4), who both won in prime time in Week 16. If the 49ers win out, they'll be the No. 1 seed, meaning they will never have to travel for the rest of the season, as they host the Seahawks in Week 18 and the Super Bowl is at Levi's Stadium in February. They look to be peaking at the right time, too, with five straight wins since Brock Purdy returned. However, the Bears are a tough team that leads the NFL in takeaways, and they have a record of six wins after trailing in the final 2 minutes of the fourth quarter. It's an extraordinary meeting of offensive minds between Kyle Shanahan and Ben Johnson.
Finally, Monday night is Matthew Stafford's chance to lock up or implode his MVP case when he faces the Atlanta Falcons in the dome. Stafford is coming off a huge game where he still lost 38-37 in overtime, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to lead a go-ahead touchdown drive in overtime and not win the game. The Rams have been giving up a lot of points lately, and we know veteran Kirk Cousins can still pick apart the occasional defense, so combine that with the Atlanta pass rush, and Stafford could be in for a shootout and more challenging game than the spread suggests.
