The Seattle Seahawks have steadily remained a 4.5-point favorite in Super Bowl 60 against the New England Patriots. Here are four key storylines to follow for the game and shape the betting narrative for what should be a competitive, defensive battle:

Which Defense Creates More Chaos?

This is a battle of two top-tier defenses. The Seahawks have the No. 1 scoring defense, but will have to prove the 27 points allowed to the Rams with the most deep passing yards (226) in any playoff game in the last decade was just a hiccup as they try to slow down a New England offense that will welcome the clearer weather this week. The Patriots also have eight takeaways in the playoffs, which is why they've been able to overcome the 15 sacks, 6 fumbles, and 2 interceptions from young Drake Maye.

But we'll see which defense can prevail with the most impactful sacks and turnovers. The Seahawks were minus-3 in turnover differential in the regular season, unbecoming of a 14-win team and No. 1 seed. But the Patriots have also played a lot of injured offenses and backups down the stretch, so this Seattle offense is one of the most talented and healthy they've faced all year, making it a great challenge for both.

Which Quarterback Loses His Nerve?

Both teams are good at stopping the run, so this Super Bowl could be on which quarterback can step up in the passing game and score enough points to win. However, don't expect an efficient shootout.

This is only the fifth Super Bowl in the last nearly 30 years in which both quarterbacks are under 30, and both are making their first Super Bowl start. Drake Maye is 23 and attempting to become the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Sam Darnold is 28 and attempting to rewrite his legacy after this late-bloomer breakout he's undergone in Minnesota and now Seattle. But the fact is, we don't know how these guys will react on the biggest stage in sports, so early nerves could be a problem, and sometimes that never eases up the rest of the game. We saw some of that in Super Bowl XL, when it was Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Hasselbeck in a Seattle loss as the No. 1 seed to a Pittsburgh team with the youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl.

Maye's had all the sacks and fumbles this postseason, and he's also had a shoulder injury to deal with leading up to Sunday's game. But maybe Darnold is under more pressure as the favorite and still a quarterback most people expect to turn the ball over, after doing so the most times in the regular season, only to play three straight clean games with everything on the line. But he'll need to do it one more time against the franchise that infamously had him “seeing ghosts” on a Monday night game in 2019, the lowest point of his career with the Jets.

Elite Matchup: Jaxon Smith-Njigba vs. Christian Gonzalez

Maybe the 1-on-1 matchup that could dictate this game the most is Seattle's stud wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN) going up against New England's star corner Christian Gonzalez, who had a game-sealing interception in the AFC Championship Game. JSN is the likely Offensive Player of the Year, and his 1,793 receiving yards were 1,200 more yards than his next closest teammate, so the passing game largely goes through him. It's long been the Patriot Way to take away your team's best receiver, so it will be interesting to see if Mike Vrabel has his defense shadow JSN with Gonzalez, or if they elect to use double teams and try to force Darnold to throw the ball elsewhere or force some throws he'd prefer not to force to his best receiver.

How this matchup goes could determine the game, but the Seahawks have done a great job all year of finding ways to get JSN open. That's why offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is in high demand as a head coach next year. Maybe Cooper Kupp can take a run at a second Super Bowl MVP award in his career with a big game while JSN draws the most attention.

Special Teams Watch

Don't forget the impact special teams can have on the Super Bowl. Arguably, the biggest game in the 2025 NFC Championship Game was when the Rams muffed an easy punt return with a ridiculous fumble that gave the Seahawks an extra possession and a short field for a touchdown. The Rams were left chasing the rest of the game. Both of these teams have played sound special teams and could have a difference maker who will try to become the first player in 60 Super Bowls to score a punt return touchdown. Rashid Shaheed (Seahawks) and Marcus Jones (Patriots) are dangerous players in this regard and could have a Devin Hester or Desmond Howard type of impact on this Super Bowl. It could be enough to provide the winning margin.
