Big 12 Win Total Best Bet: BYU Over 8.5 wins

BYU lacks the explosive athletes to compete with the elite programs in the sport, but there’s only one elite program on the schedule this year (Notre Dame).

Just like last year when it got handled by Texas Tech twice, BYU probably can’t be competitive with Notre Dame, but Kalani Sitake’s physical squad is capable of taking care of business against the rest of the Big 12.

Skeptics of the Cougars might point to their relatively light schedule as a reason to doubt the recent success, but check out how they ranked based on opponent-adjusted data:

  • Scoring offense: 25th
  • Scoring defense: 13th

With seven starters returning on defense, most notably star safety Faletau Satuala, this should again be one of the most dangerous units in the Big 12.

Big 12 Win Total Best Bet: Cincinnati Under 5.5 wins

Even with Brendan Sorsby at quarterback last year, Cincinnati only went 1-6 against teams that finished with a winning record.

Now Sorsby is gone, and Scott Satterfield chose to replace him with JC French, who is coming off a mediocre year at Georgia Southern.

Take a look at each quarterback’s sack rate versus pressure, based on data from Sports Info Solutions:

  • Sorsby: 6%, ranked 2nd out of 155 quarterbacks
  • French: 24%, ranked 139th

It’s hard to imagine French drastically improving upon that flaw as he takes a step up in level of competition.

Cincinnati will also be replacing its top two running backs (Tawee Walker, Evan Pryor) and its top five leaders in receiving yards.

The Bearcats have a good chance to jump out to a 3-0 start, but the Big 12 schedule looks like a gauntlet.

Cincinnati will face each of the top six teams with the best odds to win the conference: Texas Tech, BYU, Utah, Kansas State, Houston, and Arizona.

Satterfield has improved his win total every year at Cincinnati, but the program is almost certain to take a step backward this season.

Big 12 Win Total Best Bet: Iowa State Under 5.5 wins

Matt Campbell may have elevated the Iowa State program to new heights, but he picked over the Iowa State roster like the Grinch on his way out the door.

The Cyclones projected two-deep features zero returning starters and 35 transfers.

You can bet this under 4.5 as plus money at most books, but it’s probably worth laying -180 to get the 5.5 number.

Iowa State should pick up wins against Southeast Missouri and Bowling Green.

Then in conference play, the Cyclones have potentially winnable games at home against Cincinnati and West Virginia as well as on the road at UCF.

That’s five potentially winnable games, which is why the 5.5 number feels like it's worth paying up to get.

Good luck finding a sixth win on this schedule.

The biggest reason to doubt Jimmy Rogers’ ability to keep things on track in his first year as Campbell’s replacement is his quarterback, Arkansas State transfer Jaylen Raynor

Raynor has 36 games of starting experience, but even as a third-year starter, he was not among the better quarterbacks in the Sun Belt.

Last year at Arkansas State, Raynor generated a positive EPA on just 27% of his dropbacks versus pressure, ranked 101st in the FBS per Sports Info Solutions.

That’s a red flag which probably should have scared off Iowa State given his experience and the fact that he’ll have even less talent around him this year relative to his competition.
