Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.

Let's look at how the Philadelphia Eagles performed from a penalty perspective in 2024 and where they can improve in 2025.

How Did Penalties Impact the Philadelphia Eagles?

The Good

  • The Eagles finished the 2024 season ranking 23rd in penalties per game.
  • The Eagles offense accounted for a slightly below average 49% of the team's penalties. In raw numbers, the offense was a below average penalized unit versus the NFL average.
  • The Eagles defense surrendered a below average amount of automatic first downs via penalty, ranking 20th in penalties per game in this category. The Philadelphia defense improved dramatically year over year in this category with Vic Fangio in charge of the unit.
  • Second half penalties accounted for just 40.5% of the Eagles' overall infractions. Only the Packers rated better in this category last season.
  • The defense generated 77% of opposing false starts, offensive holding, and delay of game infractions at home. That represented the highest home field percentage of any team in the NFL in those three categories.

The Bad

  • False start and ineligible man downfield were the two problem areas for the Eagles offense. Those categories accounted for a disproportionately high 30% of the team’s overall penalties. We’re nitpicking here to find something negative, because overall, the offense was excellent.

Grade: A+

Super Bowl champions rarely repeat, which raises the first question for Philadelphia heading into 2025. Will the Eagles fall victim to the Super Bowl hangover?

The retention of Fangio was a huge boost to this team's chances of repeating, and the Philadelphia defense may improve further compared to last season's impressive unit.

Philadelphia can repeat, but in doing so, must overcome history to hoist the Lombardi Trophy again in 2025.

That said, the Eagles have an incredible franchise infrastructure and boast arguably the best offensive line in the NFL with championship level talent throughout the roster.

That foundation makes them better equipped than most to handle the rigors of a title defense and keep concerning historical trends at bay, giving the Eagles a legitimate chance to repeat in 2025.
