Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.

Let's look at how the New York Jets performed from a penalty perspective in 2024 and where they can improve in 2025.

How Did Penalties Impact the New York Jets?

The Good

  • The Jets offense accounted for 42% of the team's overall penalties, below the NFL offensive average of 51.7%.
  • Offensive holding and false starts combined to account for 28.5% of the Jets' overall penalties, compared to the NFL average of 38.7% in this category.
  • The offense generated 48% of its beneficial automatic first downs on third-down plays. The NFL average is 31.8% in this category.
  • The Jets averaged 9.5 yards per beneficial penalty. The league average is 8.1 yards.
  • The offense was a top-five beneficiary of defensive pass interference penalties.

The Bad

  • The Jets ranked as the No. 1 overall penalized team in 2024.
  • The Jets defense accounted for 53% of the team's overall penalties, significantly higher than the league average of 34.5%.
  • The Jets were a top 10 penalized team for pre-snap penalties, with a disproportionate percentage assessed on the defense.
  • The defense ranked third in surrendering automatic first downs via penalty. The one silver lining is only 18% of these were conceded on punitive third-down plays, well below the league average of 31.8% in this category.

Grade: C

Post Aaron Rodgers, the Jets have been completely overlooked this offseason, which may be a blessing in disguise.

New head coach Aaron Glenn takes over a defensive unit that fell off a cliff last season but possesses a lot of talent.

The defense will play with attitude and look to return to its lights out form of 2023.

The offensive line is young but has the potential to be one of the league's better units.

That leads us to the Jets' new quarterback.

The team's fortunes rest on the arm (and legs) of Justin Fields in 2025, who is getting one final opportunity to cement himself as a legitimate long term starter in the NFL.

With a favorable early schedule, the pressure is on Glenn and Fields to get this Jets team moving in the right direction from the get go.

If the new pieces align quickly, and that's a big if, the New York Jets could be a sneaky team vying for a Wild Card berth in 2025.
