Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.
Let's look at how the Washington Commanders performed from a penalty perspective in 2025 and where they can improve in 2026.
Washington Commanders 2026 Penalty Outlook: Discipline, Flags & Hidden Edges
The Good
- Washington ranked No. 1 in recording the highest net automatic first down via penalty advantage versus opponents on third-down plays, in part due to playing from behind at an above-average rate.
- The Commanders had a top-five advantage for fourth-quarter penalty yards compared to their opponents.
The Bad
- The Commanders ranked as a top-five penalized home team in 2025.
- Washington ranked a top-10 penalized team for pre-snap infractions, with 70% of these penalties coming via false starts, a category the Commanders ranked No. 1.
- Washington ranked second in declined penalties per game.
- The offensive holding and false start combination accounted for 43% of the team’s penalties in 2025. That represented a major increase compared to the 32.5% in these categories in 2024.
- The Commanders ranked second behind the New York Giants as the highest penalized third-down offense.
Grade: C
Washington was a prime candidate for regression after their magical 2024 run to the NFC Championship, which is exactly what happened after entering last season with sky-high expectations.
Moving forward, was 2025 a temporary setback or a warning sign of things to come?
Washington’s fortunes revolve around the health of Jayden Daniels.
The positive is that before injuries derailed his 2025 season, he still flashed franchise-quarterback traits, and the team was competitive.
While a simplistic analysis, if Daniels stays healthy, this team can compete for a playoff spot.
If not, their ceiling lowers dramatically, and the 2024 season begins to look more like an outlier rather than the beginning of a dominant new era in the nation's capital.
