Texans vs. Titans Fantasy Quarterback Preview
C.J. Stroud
Stroud delivered his first QB1 scoring week of the season on Sunday, throwing 347 yards (a career-high 11.2 yards per pass attempt) and 2 touchdowns against Dallas.
Facing Dallas helped, but getting Nico Collins back was a huge lift for Stroud and this passing game.
For his career, Stroud has completed 65.6% of his passes for 7.8 yards per pass attempt and a 5% touchdown rate with Collins on the field, compared to a 60.3% completion rate, 7.0 Y/A, and a 2.8% touchdown rate with him off the field.
In his two games with Collins this year, Stroud has been the QB16 (16.5 points) and QB3 (23.1 points).
The Texans also used pre-snap motion on a season-high 75.8% of dropbacks on Sunday.
This is something I have been begging Nick Caley to do.
Since the start of last season, Stroud averages 8.3 Y/A on plays with motion, second in the league.
On plays with motion this season, Stroud has completed 75.3% of his passes (67 of 89) for 9.6 Y/A with 4 touchdowns and zero interceptions.
He has not thrown an interception this year, regardless of who is on the field or whether he uses any motion.
Without motion, however, Stroud has completed 41.9% of his attempts (26 of 62) for 4.7 Y/A.
Even against Dallas on Sunday, he was 3 for 8 for 40 yards (5.0 Y/A) without motion.
Going back to last year, Stroud's best fantasy spots have been more matchup-centric.
His top-scoring games last year were against a depleted Ravens defense, the Cardinals, 49ers, and Titans.
He has another one of those matchups this week.
If you were streaming Stroud last week, I would stick with him as a QB1 option this week.
The Titans have allowed a 73.2% completion rate (31st) and 7.9 Y/A (23rd).
What has saved them from getting flooded (outside of facing Jameis Winston in the rain) is that they have allowed a 3.6% touchdown rate (9th).
They've also been so bad that teams haven't thrown the ball against them.
The Titans face the lowest pass rate in the NFL, and teams have thrown the ball 5.4% below expectations against them this season (31st).
That is the only thing keeping me from labeling Stroud a “trust” while staying firmly on the pro side here.
Houston may not be able to run the ball, but their only two games with a pass rate over expectations this season have been against the Bengals and Cowboys.
I don't know if Tennessee can push them, but I do buy Stroud being efficient on the passes he does attempt.
Cam Ward
Ward was not good on Sunday in Baltimore, but he managed a serviceable fantasy line (15.6 points).
Ward ended up throwing a season-high 222 passing yards
He only had 4.9 fantasy points through three quarters (QB28), but Ward scored 10.7 of his fantasy points in the fourth quarter last week.
He also added 27 rushing yards.
That resulted in a QB15 week.
Ward has yet to throw multiple passing touchdowns in a game this season.
The Houston defense has been one of the most underwhelming units compared to preseason expectations, but this is not a spot to really push how far they have fallen.
Ward remains a back-end QB2 here.
The Texans have let down, but they have faced Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Dak Prescott in three games.
Daniel Jones was the other, but they held Jones to a QB30 scoring week (7.9 points) and 6.5 yards per pass attempt.
In his two starts against Houston last season, Ward totaled 17.6 fantasy points.
