Georgia vs. Tennessee: Preview, Prediction & Best Bets
The SEC gets conference play underway with a big one between the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. The Bulldogs enter as a 4-point road favorite. Kirby Smart's Bulldogs have dominated this rivalry recently, winning eight in a row over Tennessee, including a 31-17 win last year and a 38-10 rout the last time these teams met in Neyland Stadium in 2023.
Josh Heupel has coached Tennessee since 2021, and while he's 39-15 (.722), he has yet to beat Georgia. A big part of the problem is a Georgia defense that continues to pump out NFL talent year after year. At times, Tennessee's offense can be a bit gimmicky. While it works well at the college level against most teams, its players struggle to adapt in the NFL. Georgia's high-end NFL talent has shut down the otherwise high-flying Vols in the Kirby Smart era in Athens.
On the other side of the ball, new Georgia starting quarterback Gunner Stockton is off to a decent start with 417 yards in two games. He's completing 69% of his passes and has yet to throw an interception, something Carson Beck did a little too often last year for the Bulldogs. But the ground game is still dangerous, and Stockton is a capable runner. That's a worrying sign for a Tennessee defense that appears to have regressed coming into 2025.
On the other hand, we haven't seen Georgia play anyone yet, as their strength of schedule ranks 133rd out of 136 teams in SRS. And Neyland Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in the country. Josh Heupel and the Vols are 21-1 in the last three years on their home soil (the only loss coming to Georgia). We feel like Stockton and OC Mike Bobo will need to try to take some shots downfield, which they haven't done much of to start the season.
We'll also see if new quarterback Joey Aguilar (Appalachian State transfer) is up to the task, facing by far the toughest defense of his wild and long college career.
