The plot thickens in the 2025 AFC West as both of these teams were primed to replace the Kansas City Chiefs at the top of the division, but it's the Chargers have a great shot to move to 3-0 with a win against each rival. That combination of Justin Herbert's passing and Jim Harbaugh's defensive tenacity makes for a contender, but what's really pushed the Chargers ahead to start this season is their wide receivers. Last year, rookie Ladd McConkey was the only viable weapon for Herbert. This year, Quentin Johnston is making big plays with three touchdown catches, and the NFL let Keenan Allen return to the team like he never left. He's scored twice already, too.
This is excellent news since the Chargers have been unable to get the ground game going with first-round running back Omarion Hampton. This could be the loss of tackle Rashawn Slater at work, but Joe Alt has stepped in his spot and done a great job. You trust Herbert to get the job done without a running game as he's used to doing that, but the Chargers could use more production than 3.4 yards per carry and a 43.1% success rate on rushes (39.1% for Hampton, who was involved in a late-game fumble and could see Najee Harris eat up more of his touches this week).
For this matchup, having three really good wideouts could be all the difference, as the Broncos have corner Patrick Surtain II, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, but he can only cover one receiver per play. If Johnston is going to display reliable hands and Allen is the ageless wonder, then the Chargers have the weapons to put up points on a Denver defense that has looked like a paper tiger going back to last year. This defense struggled to shut down the Bengals, Chargers, Ravens, and Bills the previous year. Last week, the Broncos blew a fourth-quarter lead in Indianapolis as Daniel Jones had a big day against this defense.
Throw in the inconsistencies of young Bo Nix, and Denver is in danger of falling to 1-2 here with the Chargers taking a 3-0 stranglehold on the division. It's a big game as both will hope to unseat the Chiefs.
