Texas vs. Ohio State: Preview, Prediction & Best Bets

CFB 2025 Week 1 • 12:00 PM ET • AUGUST 30, 2025
No. 1 Texas @ No. 3 Ohio State

SPREAD
Ohio State -0.5
TOTAL
O/U 47.5

• 🛡️ Defensive advantage: Both units were elite last year, but Texas had the top-ranked recruiting class for 2025, led by five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry.
• ⚡ X-factor: Ohio State QB Julian Sayin is an Alabama transfer with 12 career pass attempts in NCAAF.
• 🔥 Note: This is reportedly the first time a preseason No. 1-ranked team is a Week 1 underdog.

Saturday afternoon starts with a classic: Heisman Trophy favorite Arch Manning leads the No. 1 Texas Longhorns against the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes, the defending champions. Ohio State was a 2.5-point home favorite at DraftKings earlier this week, but the spread is moving closer to Texas (less than a point). This could be a pick 'em or favor Texas by kick-off.

This should be a fantastic game with very experienced coaches and defenses that ranked in the top three in scoring last year. But most attention will be on Arch Manning, who is taking over for Quinn Ewers, who suffered the game-changing fumble late in last year's seminal playoff matchup against the Buckeyes. The fumble was returned 83 yards for a touchdown, ultimately deciding the game: an Ohio State 28-14 victory.

Due to his impressive family lineage, Manning enters the season with expectations never seen before for a college player. The sophomore quarterback played well in limited action in 2024, and he looks like the fastest Manning ever to play quarterback, but can he live up to the incredible amount of hype being tossed his way? Saturday afternoon will go a long way toward answering that question, as he heads into a raucous road environment in Columbus, against a very talented Ohio State defense.

Ohio State always reloads well under head coach Ryan Day, and Jeremiah Smith, probably the most talented player in college football, is the latest in a long line of impressive wide receivers for the Buckeyes. But we'll have to see how sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin fares in taking over for Will Howard in his first college football start. The Texas defense also has excellent speed and talent, led by the elite duo of Anthony Hill, Jr. and Colin Simmons, who should both rack up a boatload of sacks this season.

  • Texas' odds to win the 2025-26 National Championship: +550 (No. 1)
  • Ohio State's odds to win the 2025-26 National Championship: +600 (No. 2)

Recently, bets have been moving the line towards Texas, and the Longhorns showed they could move the ball through the air against this defense with Ewers. When you factor in Manning's ceiling in a quarterback-friendly offense from coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas is a good pick to win this game outright on the road and make a statement against the defending champs, who lost twice last season.

🎯 SFA Best Bet: Both teams have elite defenses and inexperienced quarterbacks. We'll take the under (47.5 points) as our best bet.
