2025 NFL Head Coach Rankings, All 32 Teams

As a feature in the 2025 Sharp Football Preview Book, the Sharp Football Analysis team ranked positional units across the league for the 2025 season.

The ranking guidelines were specific to the voter, with the only requirement that the focus be on the upcoming season only, not the future outlook.

With a combination of numbers, film, and projections, the rankings were averaged for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers/tight ends, offensive line, defensive front seven, defensive secondary, and head coach.

What team has the best head coach in the NFL?

32. Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas Cowboys

New head coach Brian Schottenheimer finished last in our rankings, 13 spots below where Mike McCarthy was listed a year ago.

31. Liam Coen, Jacksonville Jaguars

Liam Coen’s rise to head coach was certainly a strange journey. He hasn’t spent consecutive years in the same place since he was the Rams' assistant wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019. So is he just a good play caller, or can he also work with his coaches and players over time to build something? We have no idea.

30. Brian Callahan, Tennessee Titans

Brian Callahan’s rookie year couldn’t have gone much worse. He’s our lowest-ranked returning head coach, and he’s even ranked behind three rookies. Now he needs to prove the organization can trust him with Ward’s development.

29. Kellen Moore, New Orleans Saints

First year head coach Kellen Moore clocked in at 29 in our rankings this year, although he did receive one vote as high as 26.

27. Aaron Glenn, New York Jets

We tend to rank rookie head coaches near the bottom since so much is unknown, but we’re optimistic about Aaron Glenn, who is the second highest ranked among this year’s rookie class.

27. Brian Daboll, New York Giants

This feels like a make or break year for Brian Daboll, who survived last year’s 3 win season but fell to 27th in our rankings, the second lowest position for any returning head coach.

26. Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts

We’re still figuring out Shane Steichen after two years, but some aggressive decisions are a positive sign for his game-management skills. Excluding plays inside their own 35-yard line, the Colts were the only team that went for it on every fourth down opportunity with 2 or fewer yards to go last year.

25. Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals

Jonathan Gannon has won 12 games in his first two years as the head coach and dropped two spots in our rankings this year, down to 25.

22. Mike Macdonald, Seattle Seahawks

At head coach, Mike Macdonald jumped up to the 22 spot after a 10-7 record in his first year with the Seahawks.

22. Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

Ben Johnson finished 22nd in his first year in the head coach rankings. The Lions finished top five in points and yards in each of Johnson’s three seasons running the offense.

22. Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons

Head coach Raheem Morris jumps up four spots in our rankings in his second year. Morris has just one winning season in four full seasons as a head coach and has yet to make the postseason.

21. Dave Canales, Carolina Panthers

Head coach Dave Canales jumped nine spots in this year’s rankings and finished as the Panthers’ second highest graded unit. If the success Bryce Young had at the end of the season is sustained through 2025, Canales could continue his climb up the rankings.

20. Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders

Votes for Pete Carroll ranged from 16th to 25th. He needs to prove the game hasn’t passed him by, as he clearly became more conservative relative to the rest of the league in his final seasons in Seattle.

19. Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins

Confidence in Mike McDaniel has plummeted, as he fell from seventh to 19th in our coach rankings. To be fair, McDaniel has been hurt by team-building issues 一 the depth across the roster has gone from bad to worse 一 but he also hasn’t yet made the adjustments needed to get the most out of his depleted roster.

18. Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals

Votes for Zac Taylor ranged from 14th to 20th, so no one thinks he’s on the hot seat, but we’re also not sure he’s the guy to elevate a mediocre roster to higher levels unless Joe Burrow puts the team on his back with an MVP campaign.

17. Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns

Votes for Kevin Stefanski ranged from 12th to 25th. Although he’s a two time Coach of the Year, no team fell further from expectations in 2024.

15. Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots

Mike Vrabel lands in the middle of the pack of our coach rankings with votes ranging from 10th to 20th. His conservative tendencies worked fine in Tennessee with Derrick Henry as the focal point of his offense. We’ll see how he adjusts now that his team is structured around a dynamic athlete at quarterback.

15. DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans

The jury is still out on DeMeco Ryans as a head coach. He would probably benefit from more aggressive decisions. Excluding plays inside their own 35-yard line, the Texans only went for it on fourth and 2 or shorter 60% of the time last year.

14. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Todd Bowles has been solid during his three year run with the Buccaneers, making the playoffs in each of those seasons. He jumps to 14th in this year’s rankings after finishing 20th a year ago.

13. Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders

Dan Quinn’s first year with Washington was such a success that he moved up 12 spots from 25 to 13 in our rankings this year. Quinn has posted three years with 10 wins in seven seasons as an NFL head coach.

12. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

Placing Mike Tomlin in our coach rankings has always been tough 一 votes ranged from ninth to 18th. On one hand, he’s a poor game manager with consistent issues handling the clock. On the other, no one is better at managing the egos in the locker room 一 though Aaron Rodgers is sure to test that track record this year.

11. Sean Payton, Denver Broncos

Votes for Sean Payton ranged from eighth to 19th. That 11-point range was the sixth largest among head coaches. As an offensive-minded head coach, there’s a lot of pressure on Payton to elevate a unit lacking in talent and continue to aid Bo Nix’s development.

9. Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers

Votes for Jim Harbaugh ranged from fifth to 22nd. Predictably, Harbaugh was the league’s most conservative coach on fourth downs. Excluding plays inside their own 35-yard line, the Chargers only went for it on fourth and 2 or shorter 50% of the time.

9. Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills

Sean McDermott’s consistency was viewed favorably by our voters as he climbed four spots in the rankings to crack the top 10.

8. Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers

Matt LaFleur remains in our top 10 rankings, joining four of the other six units on the Packers roster. His entry at the No. 8 spot is two slots lower than where he finished in 2024.

7. Kevin O'Connell, Minnesota Vikings

Kevin O’Connell has posted a 34-17 record in three years as head coach, but he finished outside the top five of our coach rankings as he continues to search for his first postseason victory.

6. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers

One year after winning the NFC, Kyle Shanahan saw his stock fall from second in last year’s voting to sixth in the current rankings. Still an elite schemer, Shanahan now has four winning seasons in eight years as a head coach.

3. Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles

At head coach, Nick Sirianni jumped eight spots in our rankings into a tie for third, trailing just Andy Reid and John Harbaugh. Despite his divisive personality, Sirianni is one of just five coaches in NFL history to have a winning percentage over .700.

3. Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams

Sean McVay put together perhaps his best coaching performance in 2024 and finished in a tie for third with Nick Sirianni and Dan Campbell in our voting.

3. Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions

Head coach Dan Campbell moves up one spot in our rankings after his second straight playoff appearance, tying Nick Sirianni and Sean McVay for the third spot behind Andy Reid and John Harbaugh.

2. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens

John Harbaugh falls at No. 2 in our head coach rankings for the third consecutive year. He was ranked no lower than third on any ballot.

1. Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs

Andy Reid is our top-ranked coach for the fourth consecutive year, and it is the third straight time it has been a unanimous decision.
