Big Ten Win Total Best Bet: Oregon Over 10.5 Wins

The trend of Big Ten teams returning nearly their entire rosters and winning titles might continue, with Oregon becoming the fourth to do so in the last four years.

The Ducks bring back 14 starters and are likely to be favored in at least 11 games, potentially being a road underdog at Ohio State in November.

Other than the Buckeyes, Oregon’s next toughest test will be:

  • Week 4 at USC
  • Week 10 vs. Michigan
  • Week 13 vs. Washington

It’s tough to imagine any of those teams seriously pushing Oregon, especially with two of those contests coming at home.

Oregon’s dominance is perhaps best summed by their explosive play rates from a season ago:

  • Offense: ranked 2nd
  • Defense: ranked 7th

The Ducks are just too well-rounded to be threatened by anyone other than college football’s elite, and it looks like only one of those teams is on the schedule this year.

Big Ten Win Total Best Bet: Nebraska Under 6.5 Wins

There’s a chance Nebraska starts 5-0, but yet another late-season collapse appears to be in store for the Huskers based on their schedule in the final seven games:

  • Week 6 – Indiana
  • Week 7 – at Oregon
  • Week 9 – Washington
  • Week 10 – at Illinois
  • Week 11 – at Rutgers
  • Week 12 – Ohio State
  • Week 13 – at Iowa

There are certainly some winnable games in that stretch, but the three easiest contests will be on the road, and Matt Rhule is just 4-9 in Big Ten road games since joining the Huskers.

Nebraska fans will point to the returning production (12 starters) as reason to be optimistic, but there are still some glaring holes that do not appear to have been adequately addressed in the offseason.

Take a look at Nebraska’s opponent-adjusted run defense from a season ago based on data from Sports Info Solutions:

  • Yards allowed before contact: ranked 121st
  • Yards allowed after contact: ranked 86th

If Nebraska still can’t stop the run, it will be tough to compete against the more physical teams on the schedule late in the year.

Big Ten Win Total Best Bet: Iowa Under 7.5 Wins

Respect for Kirk Ferentz seems to be pulling a lot of weight with this line given how much Iowa has to replace and the lack of transfer portal talent coming into the program.

The Hawkeyes return just three starters on each side of the ball from a squad that went 8-4 a season ago.

Ferentz’s squad tends to find ways to win competitive games, but there might be too many of them on the schedule this year to reach eight victories.

Even if Iowa runs the table at home, a 7-5 record remains a possibility due to this road schedule:

  • at Michigan
  • at Washington
  • at Minnesota
  • at Northwestern
  • at Illinois

To hit the over, Iowa likely needs to win at least two of those road contests due to a likely home loss against Ohio State.

Iowa also has home games against Wisconsin and Nebraska, which probably fall into the toss-up category.

Big Ten Win Total Best Bet: UCLA Under 6.5 Wins

The Bruins hired former James Madison head coach Bob Chesney this offseason, which will be a substantial upgrade on the sidelines.

However, asking him to take last year’s mess and turn it into a seven-win squad is a tall task, especially with tough non-conference games against Cal and San Diego State.

UCLA could have as many as 16 starters from the transfer portal, but quarterback Nico Iamaleava remains, and his performance probably sets a lower ceiling for the Bruins.

Iamaleava will be playing for his fourth offensive coordinator in three years and will need to know how to process quickly to handle the offense run by new coordinator Dean Kennedy.

Kennedy’s quarterback at James Madison, Alonza Barnett III, got rid of the ball in 2.5 seconds or less 45% of the time last year while producing a turnover-worthy play at the eighth-lowest rate in the FBS, according to Pro Football Focus.

Iamaleava got rid of the ball quickly 40% of the time, but ranked 79th in turnover-worthy play rate (2.3%).

Optimism around UCLA is probably leaning too much on Chesney's reputation and ignoring the reality that we have yet to see a reason to trust Iamaleava.
