Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.
Let's look at how the New York Giants performed from a penalty perspective in 2025 and where they can improve in 2026.
New York Giants 2026 Penalty Outlook: Discipline, Flags & Hidden Edges
The Good
- The New York offense was a top-three beneficiary of automatic first downs via penalty. The duo of unnecessary roughness and roughing the passer penalties elevated the Giants into the top tier in this category, with New York ranking first and second as beneficiaries in those categories last season.
- Giants contests averaged the most combined automatic first downs via penalty in 2025. This isn't really a good or bad point, but that volume and the associated yardage that comes with it add to overall game volatility.
The Bad
- The Giants ranked third overall in penalties per game.
- The Giants tied for second in penalties per game on the road.
- The offense accounted for an above-average 54% of the team's penalties.
- The Giants ranked No. 1 for pre-snap penalty per-game average, with false start and delay of game infractions responsible for two-thirds of the penalties in this category.
- The Giants ranked as the No. 1 penalized third-down offense in the NFL.
- The offense was the No. 1 penalized unit in the fourth quarter of games last season.
Grade: C
The Giants have been one of the most dysfunctional franchises over the past decade and are banking on the arrival of John Harbaugh providing stability at the head coaching position.
On paper, the G-Men's impressive front seven has the potential to wreak havoc.
But it's on the offensive side of the ball where New York’s season will be determined.
Their “big three” of Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers are all injury-prone, and that trio remaining healthy is vital if the Giants plan to return to prominence.
Strategic offseason moves have generated a ton of hype, and the Giants are one of the more intriguing teams going into the season.
In reality, they are at least a year away from legitimate contender tier status.
If everything aligns in their favor, the Giants can finish around .500 and possibly push for a Wild Card spot.
