- The Cowboys have won 13 games in a row against the Giants with Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback.
- The Cowboys converted a league-best 63.6% (7 of 11) of their third downs in Week 1.
- Dallas was one of two teams (the Colts being the other) that did not have a drive without a new set of downs.
- The Giants punted on a league-high 66.7% of their possessions in Week 1 after ranking 30th in the department in 2024 (42.1%).
- The Giants allowed the highest pressure rate on non-blitz dropbacks in Week 1 (43.8%).
- Giants running backs failed to gain yardage on a league-high 46.7% of their runs in Week 1. The league rate was 22.1%.
Trust = spike production for that player
Quarterback
Dak Prescott: It was a nondescript fantasy night for Prescott in Week 1 (7.8 points), but he played a better real life game than the box score showed.
He had the highest aggressive throw rate per Next Gen Stats (26.5%) and was fourth among all passers in big-time throw rate per Pro Football Focus (10.3%).
He was not sacked and had the highest drop rate (11.8%) in Week 1.
This offense did some things structurally to like as well.
Dallas used pre-snap motion on 52.9% of Prescott’s dropbacks.
That would be a career high if it remains static.
One thing I do want to keep tabs on is the Dallas defense.
Coming into this season, we were looking at Dallas having the potential to be similar to last year’s Bengals.
One thing we may not have factored into that outcome is the addition of Matt Eberflus.
Eberflus has a history of passive, zone-based defense, forcing opponents to sustain drives and prevent big passing plays.
That is what happened in Week 1 against the Eagles.
We have seen this with Jonathan Gannon in Arizona.
Playing soft defense that allows shallow completions can be a restrictor plate on offensive play volume.
This was only one game, so we won’t assume that will be the case, but Dallas did not run a lot of plays and was 27th in time of possession differential to open the year.
The good news is that we will see Prescott in a favorable matchup as a home favorite with a rest advantage.
The Giants did not get much pressure in Week 1 against Jayden Daniels, pressuring him on 23.7% of his dropbacks (29th).
They only got pressure on 18.2% of their blitzes (29th) despite sending extra defenders 27% of the time (15th).
When the Giants did not get pressure in Week 1, they allowed 10.8 yards per completion (22nd) and 7.1 yards per pass attempt (20th).
In a softer layout than Week 1, Prescott is back on the table as a fringe QB1.
Russell Wilson: It took all of one week to ramp up the Jaxson Dart conversation due to Wilson’s struggles.
Wilson completed 45.9% of his passes, ahead of only Cam Ward in the season opener.
He finished 12.7% below his expected completion rate, ahead of only Bryce Young.
His 4.5 yards per pass attempt ranked 29th.
Only 25.9% of Wilson’s throws were between the numbers (31st).
Wilson managed to add 44 yards rushing, which helped his fantasy game as much as possible, but that was only good for QB22 (11.1 points).
As noted with Prescott, Dallas played extremely passive defense against the Eagles, forcing everything underneath.
They played zone on a league-high 82.3% rate of snaps, allowing 4.9 air yards per pass attempt (third).
Wilson’s game has been dependent on vertical passing, something Washington took away in Week 1.
Only 5.4% of his attempts in the opener were deep throws (27th), while his 6.1 air yards per attempt ranked 25th.
Dallas also still managed a 42.4% pressure rate in Week 1 (4th) despite blitzing at the 23rd rate (18.2%).
With a potentially shortened leash and not a great matchup on paper, Wilson is only an option in 2QB formats.
