Best NFL Thanksgiving Games to Bet On
The NFL Week 13 schedule features three great Thanksgiving games. Let's preview each Feast Week matchup below.
Thursday| 1:00 PM ET | Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions (-2.5, O/U 49.5)
It's hard to believe the Chicago Bears (8-3) are actually leading the NFC North going into Thursday, but this is still a very important game that could go a long way in determining the division winner this season. If the Lions want to win the NFC North for the third year in a row, they have to get the split here after already losing in Week 1 at Green Bay in a game where the offense was so ineffective against the new Micah Parsons-led defense. But the Lions have Dan Campbell calling plays now, and they always play better at home, where they can be more explosive, and Jared Goff feels more comfortable. The team had a big comeback against the Giants to win in overtime last week.
The Packers are coming off a 23- 6 win over Minnesota, the first time this year they covered a 6-point spread with relative ease. The defense has been consistent all year, but the offense is what's sunk the Packers in their losses to the Browns, Panthers, and Eagles. However, Jordan Love traveled to Detroit on Thanksgiving in 2023 and led the team to a win. He also played very well in a 34-31 shootout on a Thursday night last December in Detroit, so this moment isn't too big for him at all.
The Lions will need to protect Goff better and not rely on so many checkdowns like they did in Week 1 when Goff had a high completion percentage but few valuable completions. It is worth noting that it was the first game without Ben Johnson calling plays, so the Lions should feel better about getting their second look at this improved Green Bay defense. It should be a tight game.
Thursday| 4:30 PM ET | Kansas City Chiefs vs. Dallas Cowboys (-3.5, O/U 49.5)
The Chiefs and Cowboys had the most exciting comeback wins on Sunday, with the Chiefs coming back from a 20-9 deficit to beat the Colts in overtime, the largest fourth-quarter comeback in the Patrick Mahomes era. The Cowboys tied their franchise record with a 21-point comeback win against the Eagles, having quickly fallen behind 21-0 at home and ultimately winning 24-21. The wins give both teams some hope for the playoffs, but they know they'll have to keep winning to ensure they can qualify, as there is little margin for error left.
The Chiefs enter as a 3.5-point road favorite given their track record of success in big games. But they finally won a one-score game against the Colts after being the only winless (0-5) team in such games before Week 12. It was a big one, too, as Patrick Mahomes threw for over 350 yards and found his wide receivers in critical spots. It's a huge growth game for them as they'll need to step up and beat teams without Travis Kelce as the focal point. Rashee Rice had over 140 yards in arguably his best game as a pro. The Chiefs also ran 91 plays on offense, which is good news for a rested defense on a short week, but Kareem Hunt might be feeling a bit sore after more than 30 carries on Sunday.
You might see Patrick Mahomes, playing his first NFL game in his hometown, air it out more as he's 14-1 in domes with great numbers across the board. We know the Dallas defense also has some issues with generating a good pass rush, so this might be the spot for Mahomes and his receivers to go wild again. The Cowboys employ a lot of zone coverage, which Mahomes has consistently picked apart at an elite level. It's man coverage that gives the Chiefs bigger issues. However, we'll see if they can improve in the red zone, where they were 1-for-5 in scoring touchdowns against Indy, resulting in another turnover.
However, we'll see if Steve Spagnuolo's defense can perform well on the road, as the Chiefs have done much better at home while experiencing their worst defensive performances on the road. Dallas boasts a formidable offense with Dak Prescott, and George Pickens has arguably outplayed CeeDee Lamb as the team's top receiver. Trent McDuffie can only cover one receiver at a time for the Chiefs, so that's another great matchup to watch in this one.
Thursday| 8:15 PM ET | Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens (-7, O/U 51.5)
Joe Burrow said he was eyeing Thanksgiving as his return date, and it looks like he was right about that. Unfortunately, the Bengals are 3-8 after they were unable to capitalize on a good rushing and defensive performance against the Patriots on Sunday. But at 3-8, the Bengals still have two games left with Baltimore here, so there is a chance to still win the AFC North. I think it's reasonable for Burrow to give it a go after he's been medically cleared.
However, we must acknowledge that Tee Higgins suffered a concussion on Sunday, so he won't be ready for Thursday night. Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase can still play catch just fine, but no Higgins is a loss. Additionally, the elephant in the room is that Burrow wasn't playing well at all for the first five quarters of this season. Perhaps we can attribute that to a strong Cleveland defense in Week 1, but it's worth noting that he should be rusty in this game, playing against a defense that also knows him well. The Baltimore defense has played significantly better in recent weeks, as well.
That's big because the Baltimore offense hasn't looked that hot since Lamar Jackson returned from his hamstring injury. He hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in consecutive games after having a 30-game streak with a touchdown pass before that. But the Bengals have been one of the worst defenses in the Super Bowl era this season. Jackson should perk up in this matchup against a team he is 10-1 as a starter against in his career. The Ravens (6-5) are over .500 for the first time this season and are the favorites to win the AFC North. They can't afford a loss at home as a heavy favorite here to a team that's struggled as much as the Bengals.
