It's a new day in the Vikings vs. Bears rivalry in the NFC North. We finally get to see J.J. McCarthy make his first NFL start after a meniscus injury ended his rookie season in the preseason. He'll try to keep things rolling after Sam Darnold surprisingly led the team to a 14-3 record. Then we'll see the head coach debut of Chicago's Ben Johnson, the talented offensive mind who was behind calling Detroit's offense the last three years. He has the task of getting Caleb Williams, last year's No. 1 overall pick, on track after a difficult rookie year where the Bears lost 10 games in a row and he took a ton of sacks.

Johnson has been saying all the right things this offseason about fitting the scheme to Williams' skills instead of forcing him to play like Jared Goff did. We'll see how it goes this week, but the Bears had some preseason success. The Vikings largely have kept McCarthy under wraps, and he's one of the least experienced quarterbacks to become a Week 1 starter in  Year 2 in NFL history, right up there with Daunte Culpepper (2000 Vikings) and Carson Palmer (2004 Bengals). But the oddsmakers still think the Vikings have a better shot at making the playoffs this year than Chicago, according to the latest odds from Bet365:

• Vikings' odds to make the NFL playoffs: +105
• Bears' odds to make the NFL playoffs: +190

That's why this is a big game right away for both teams in an NFC North that was historic last year. But we've seen turnarounds bigger than Chicago before. Johnson and Williams could be the next Sean McVay and Jared Goff, who were paired together in Los Angeles in 2017 and produced immediate results after Goff's disastrous rookie year, which was even worse than what happened to Williams in 2024. It's only fitting that Johnson is coming over after coaching Goff in his prime to help Williams, who saw his offensive coordinator fired at midseason. He reportedly was not taught how to study film.

But there are several reasons to like the Bears as a home underdog who can win this game outright:

• Johnson got the best of the matchups with Flores when they were coordinators for the Lions and Vikings these last few years; he'll be prepared for some of the things Flores will try throwing at them.
• The Bears added even more talent in the draft in tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden, giving Williams one of the deepest receiving groups in the NFL.
• The Bears addressed the offensive line by trading for veteran guards Joe Thuney (Chiefs) and Jonah Jackson (Rams).
• Johnson has stressed a higher completion percentage and getting rid of the ball faster for Williams, who didn't throw many picks but took 68 sacks last year.
• Williams already threw for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns without good coaching in his first game against Flores' Vikings defense last year, a 30-27 overtime loss.
• The Vikings have been volatile under Kevin O'Connell, going from 13-4 (with a negative scoring differential) to 7-10 to 14-3 in his three seasons.
• The Jordan Addison suspension knocks the Vikings down a weapon, and Adam Thielen, who has only just joined the team from Carolina, can't have much chemistry with McCarthy yet.
• McCarthy is a total wild card and could be overwhelmed on the road in his first NFL start in what is effectively a redshirt sophomore year.

Maybe McCarthy and Johnson are the real deal, but this should be fun to watch and bet on this Monday night.
