The Seahawks and Patriots are unfamiliar opponents in an unfamiliar position, with this being the first Super Bowl for many of the players in this matchup. But it also doesn't feel like a complicated matchup: The defense that causes the most havoc is likely to produce the win.
For the Patriots and young Drake Maye, he must protect the ball as he did in Denver and realize that taking sacks is usually better than forcing an interception in a game like this. Field position is also huge in a game like this. Seattle has feasted on short fields since November, so you don't need to make things easier on them. Maye has taken 15 sacks in the playoffs, the second most in any postseason in NFL history. But if he avoids the fumbles and the big interception, he might be able to ride his defense and his legs to a low-scoring win, as this shouldn't be a shootout.
On the other side, it's Sam Darnold's moment of truth. He's had three turnover-free games in a row, all huge profile games against playoff teams, but they were also against defenses from the 49ers and Rams that he's faced multiple times this year. The Patriots are a brand-new opponent, and their defense has eight takeaways this postseason. Darnold led all quarterbacks in turnovers in the regular season, and the Seahawks' last loss was against the Rams when he threw four interceptions. That's always the concern with him, and the Patriots have the run defense to make him have to throw more to have offensive success, and they have an elite corner (Christian Gonzalez) who can try to slow down Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the favorite to win Offensive Player of the Year.
It should be a competitive game, a defensive game, and the Patriots should welcome the better weather after their last few games. The Seahawks are a deserving favorite on the spread, but the talk of a blowout win for them feels unfounded. The Patriots have lost once since October started, and that was a game against Buffalo in which they led 21-0. They can win this gam,e and it wouldn't even rank in the top three for biggest Super Bowl upsets involving the Patriots.
