NFL Betting Lines for Wild Card Round: Spreads, Storylines & Facts to Know
The NFL wild card schedule should be a great one after what's been one of the most stunning, competitive NFL seasons in a long time. A record seven new division winners, the 2025 NFC West is the first division ever with three 12-win teams, and the 2025 AFC is the first NFL conference ever with five 12-win teams. It should lead to an exciting and unpredictable postseason as the teams are so close.
Things kick off on Saturday afternoon with what could be the largest spread for a home underdog in NFL playoff history. The Panthers (8-9) are currently a 10.5-point home underdog despite already defeating the Rams (12-5) at home as a 10-point underdog in Week 13. That was the game where they forced Matthew Stafford into three turnovers after he came into the game with just two interceptions all season. Bryce Young also threw two of his three touchdown passes on fourth downs, and the Panthers held on for a 31-28 win. Tetairoa McMillan is a favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year, and his only catch in that game was the 43-yard game-winning touchdown. Young has 12 game-winning drives out of his 14 wins in the NFL, and this is his biggest game yet as the Panthers have won the NFC South for the first time since 2015. But the Rams are the only team to have a tie in the fourth quarter of all 17 games, so they have played well all year.
On Saturday night, the NFL is hoping the Bears and Packers can create a third magical finish since December as the NFC North's oldest rivalry resumes with another playoff matchup. The Packers (9-7-1) have not won a game since defeating Chicago in Week 14 after Caleb Williams threw an interception in a 28-21 loss on fourth down. However, Williams was in the same spot in Week 16, and that time he threw a game-tying touchdown before the beautiful overtime winner to D.J. Moore in another stunning comeback win for the Bears (11-6), the only team to win six games after trailing in the final 2:00. But Jordan Love (concussion) has been cleared for return, he's the only quarterback to win a game as a No. 7 seed, and the Packers got rest in Week 18 for players like Josh Jacobs, Zach Tom, and Christian Watson. This is the healthiest they've been in weeks.
In the early Sunday afternoon window, we have a dandy between the Buffalo Bills (12-5) and Jacksonville Jaguars (13-4), a new matchup this year. People are saying this is Josh Allen's year with no Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, or Lamar Jackson in the playoffs. But what if it's Trevor Lawrence's year instead? The No. 1 overall pick has been on fire since the bye week with eight straight wins and a career-high 38 total touchdowns. He's coming into the game hotter than Allen, who has struggled to produce yards and points on the road this year. But Sean McDermott's defense has done quite well in playoff games outside of the ones against the Chiefs, so that pass defense is why the Bills have a shot to navigate this AFC with Allen as the most accomplished quarterback in his prime in the filed. But Lawrence has playoff experience too, and Liam Coen might be the Coach of the Year for Jacksonville.
In the late afternoon window on Sunday, we get a classic NFC matchup between the San Francisco 49ers (12-5) and Philadelphia Eagles (11-6), two teams that have been to multiple Super Bowls since 2019. This is a rematch of the 2022 NFC Championship Game, the one where Brock Purdy's elbow was injured on the opening drive, denying us a classic. Injuries have been a huge story for the 49ers, who won't have Nick Bosa and Fred Warner on defense. But it's more about whether left tackle Trent Williams can play to protect Purdy and help open lanes for Christian McCaffrey against an elite defense that could carry the Eagles all the way back to the Super Bowl despite the offensive struggles for Jalen Hurts and company under coordinator Kevin Patullo. The 49ers scored a season-low 3 points last week against Seattle with a chance to get the No. 1 seed, so their punishment is a tough road trip to Philadelphia, who rested key starters in Week 18.
On Sunday Night Football, the Patriots (14-3) put their 4-0 prime-time record up against the 5-0 prime-time record of the Los Angeles Chargers (11-6). Justin Herbert is seeking his first playoff win, and he got to rest that injured hand in Week 18. The Patriots have notoriously beat up on the NFL's easiest schedule in 26 years as they are just 1-2 in games against winning teams. They have not really faced a quarterback like Herbert combined with a defense led by coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter. It should be a great test for Drake Maye in his first playoff game after an MVP-caliber season. The Chargers have to protect Herbert, who has been the most hit quarterback this year due to his offensive tackles going out with season-ending injuries. But Harbaugh has gone on deep playoff runs before, and Mike Vrabel is 0-3 in his last three playoff games with Tennessee.
On Monday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7) will put many streaks on the line against the Houston Texans (12-5), who have their own streaks with nine straight wins and an 0-6 lifetime record in road playoff games. But the Steelers have lost their last six playoff games under Mike Tomlin, and they have allowed at least 28 points in each of them, another record. However, the Steelers have won 23 straight home games on Monday Night Football going back to 1991, so they have that on their side here as Aaron Rodgers tries to extend his career against the No. 1 ranked defense that showed some serious cracks against Riley Leonard (Colts) on Sunday. D.K. Metcalf will also return from suspension to give Rodgers his best weapon back, and no one is happier that the Ravens missed that game-winning field goal than Metcalf. But C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans are 2-0 in the wild card round, and they'll try to continue that streak with a road win here to close the first round.
