The matchup for Super Bowl LIX is set as the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles with a chance for the three-peat to end the way it started as these teams just met two years ago in Super Bowl 57. Our Super Bowl preview will look at the early betting lines for the big game.

We'll also highlight an exclusive Bet365 betting offer for Super Bowl LIX.

Super Bowl Preview

Chiefs vs. Eagles: Betting Tips, Breakdown & Prediction

The Kansas City Chiefs (17-2) keep finding ways to win as they have won 17 straight one-score games. The Eagles (17-3) have lost just once since October and have their own special season courtesy of Saquon Barkley, who can finish with the most rushing yards in NFL history in a season when you include the playoffs. This could be one of the best Super Bowls in history.

The Chiefs open as a 2-point favorite with a total of 49.5 points at Bet365, but don't be surprised if there's some decent little line movement in the next two weeks. You have to think the over is already a popular bet:

  • Their last Super Bowl ended 38-35, the most points ever scored by a Super Bowl loser in history.
  • The Chiefs just hung on for a 32-29 win against Buffalo, setting their season high in points.
  • The Eagles dropped 55 points on Washington, the most ever by a team in a Conference Championship Game.

Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl LIX Preview: Head-to-Head History

This Super Bowl preview has a fantastic matchup for fans to look forward to as these teams already played a classic Super Bowl two years ago. Travis Kelce and Jalen Hurts opened the scoring with touchdowns before the Chiefs fell behind, only to tie the game on a fumble return by Nick Bolton after Hurts lost the ball. It was Hurts' only real mistake in the game, but the Chiefs still had to rally back from a 10-point deficit with big plays from Kadarius Toney and Patrick Mahomes' legs on the game-winning drive.

There was a controversial defensive holding penalty on James Bradberry on Kansas City's game-winning drive to basically run down the clock to mere seconds, helping the Chiefs win 38-35 and robbing us of a truly classic ending to what was a highlight-filled game. But Bradberry also admitted he grabbed the receiver, so it's sour grapes.

The teams also met on Monday Night Football in the 2023 season with the Eagles coming back to win 21-17 in the fourth quarter after forcing a Kelce fumble and watching Marquez Valdes-Scantling drop a 50-yard touchdown in the final minutes.

Now comes the game with even bigger stakes as the Chiefs can pull off the first ever Super Bowl three-peat. They've won two rings against the 49ers (2019, 2023) already, so it would be fitting if they could double up on Philly. But Saquon Barkley will have plenty to say about that.

Defensive Edge: Toss Up?

It's a tough call to say which defense you should trust more given the 38-35 game these played two years ago. The Chiefs and Eagles are both playing better defense in 2024 than they are in 2022, but let's look at how they match up this time.

The Chiefs will have to contain Barkley, of course.

  • Kansas City's run defense was highly ranked for most of the season, shut down Derrick Henry (Ravens) in Week 1, but it has shown vulnerabilities late in the season.
  • The Chiefs have better coverage now with Jaylen Watson back at corner, but taller receivers give them trouble, so A.J. Brown could be a problem after a strong game against Washington.
  • Jalen Hurts had the knee injury going into Sunday, but he looked as good as he did all year, and he'll have revenge on his mind against the Chiefs.

The Eagles will have to find a way to slow down Andy Reid after a bye week:

  • Patrick Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls after trailing by 10 points, so it's not how you start but how you finish.
  • The Eagles have let some teams hang around this year, including the Browns, Jaguars, Panthers, and Rams (13 yards away from a 13-point comeback win in the divisional round).
  • Philadelphia has great outside coverage against receivers, but Travis Kelce and Kareem Hunt could be a problem for them.

Offensive Concern: Chiefs' Offensive Line vs. Eagles Front

A key matchup should be Kansas City's revamped offensive line against the front seven led by Jalen Carter. The Chiefs have moved All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle, but failure on the left side of the line almost hurt them in the AFC Championship Game against Buffalo on a huge sack on first-and-goal on the game-winning drive. By not having Thuney lined up from Carter, the Chiefs could struggle inside with their running game and pressure right in Mahomes' face.

Eagles vs. Chiefs Preview: Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, this is probably the best matchup for the 2024 NFL season. You get to see the Chiefs and Mahomes go for the three-peat history against a familiar opponent with a top-ranked defense. You also get to see if Saquon Barkley, on his birthday, can shine and become the first running back to win Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis did it for the 1997 Broncos. Yes, it's really been that long, but Barkley has been unbelievable this year, and it should be an exciting game that goes down to the wire. Maybe we'll even get a classic final drive this time. But it sure is hard to bet against the Chiefs one win away from immortality of the three-peat.
