Alabama vs. LSU Best Bet Prediction:
- LSU -5.5 points
Kalen DeBoer has an elite track record on the road, but this looks like a tough matchup for the Tide, so let's play LSU against the spread.
Alabama's Key Matchup on Offense
Alabama will need to find a way to protect its freshman quarterback Keelon Russell in order to pull off an upset in Death Valley.
Check out these opponent-adjusted numbers on the pass-protection battle from Sports Info Solutions:
- Alabama: ranked 81st in pressure rate allowed
- LSU: ranked 20th in pressure rate generated
One of the reasons for Alabama's struggles in pass protection is Kalen DeBoer‘s and coordinator Ryan Grubb‘s scheme, which asks its quarterback to hang in the pocket and attack downfield.
Although that approach can lead to big plays, it also leads to too many sacks with an inexperienced quarterback.
Alabama quarterbacks have held the ball for at least 2.5 seconds on 61% of their dropbacks, the nation's 21st-highest rate, according to Pro Football Focus.
That's problematic against an LSU defense that generates a 50% pressure rate against extended dropbacks and a 20% sack rate, the highest rate in the country.
For the DeBoer/Grubb offense to reach its full potential, they need a quarterback who can hang in the pocket but still avoid costly sacks.
Someone like Michael Penix, who took a sack on just 7.5% of his dropbacks versus pressure in 2023 at Washington.
So it's understandable why the offense at Alabama has never looked like the 2023 Huskies when you see quarterback sack rate versus pressure:
- 2026 Russell: 22%
- 2025 Ty Simpson: 18%
- 2024 Jalen Milroe: 19%
Russell's sack rate versus pressure ranks 110th and could be the deciding factor in this game against an LSU defense that is converting 34% of its pressures into sacks, the top rate in the FBS.
To make matters worse for Alabama, center Racin Delgatty and left guard William Sanders are both listed as questionable on the injury report.
A banged-up Alabama offensive line against this LSU pass rush could be a recipe for disaster.
LSU's Key Matchup on Offense
The typical Lane Kiffin offense features lots of quick passes and opportunities for his receivers to make plays in space, and this year is no different.
LSU throws the ball 5 or fewer yards downfield on 48% of its attempts, so let's check out the performance of these teams on those plays, via Sports Info Solutions:
- LSU: 8.3 yards per reception, ranked 10th
- Alabama: 7.0 yards per reception allowed, ranked 90th
Kiffin has always liked receivers who run hard after the catch, and he's found that again with this group of transfers he brought to LSU.
Tigers receivers are averaging a broken/missed tackle forced once every 4.2 receptions, ranked 19th.
That's bad news for Alabama's defense, which ranks 82nd in broken/missed tackle rate against the pass.
Those numbers are obviously contributing factors to each unit's success, or lack thereof, on short throws.
It's also worth noting that Alabama does not have the elite pass rush needed to disrupt LSU's quick passing attack.
On dropbacks lasting less than 2.5 seconds, Alabama ranks 71st in pressure rate generated at 13%.
Based on the lack of pass rush and tackling issues, it should come as no shock that the Tide also rank 94th in yards per attempt allowed on quick dropbacks.
So it looks like LSU should be able to move the ball with its passing game, potentially forcing Alabama into a shootout, which likely isn't the type of game the Tide wants to play in a tough road environment.
Final Thoughts on LSU vs. Alabama State Best Bets
The home team with the more experienced quarterback looks like the side to take, so let's lay the points and play LSU against the spread.
My only hesitation is DeBoer's dominant record in big games on the road.
Against ranked opponents on the road, DeBoer is 10-3 as a head coach.
Few coaches have their team better prepared for big games than DeBoer, but constant pressure on a freshman quarterback might be the antidote LSU needs to combat DeBoer's road magic.
