Sunday, Dec. 14 | 1:00 PM ET | Arizona Cardinals vs. Houston Texans (-10, O/U 42.5)
The Houston Texans (8-5) have their eyes on the playoffs after a fifth-straight win with an impressive display of defense in Kansas City. Houston has had the No. 1 defense all season, but the offense with C.J. Stroud is starting to make enough plays too, and now the Texans open as a big 10-point favorite at home against the struggling Arizona Cardinals (3-10).
We’d say this matchup is one-sided with the way Houston has handled Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes this year, but Jacoby Brissett has been a machine with at least 258 passing yards in all eight starts he’s made for the injured Kyler Murray. Brissett has also thrown multiple touchdown passes in seven of these eight starts, and no quarterback has more such games this season with that many yards and touchdowns together. He has done wonders for the fantasy value of Trey McBride and Michael Wilson.
Unfortunately, it has not led to many wins, as the Cardinals are 1-7 when Brissett starts, with the only win coming in Dallas. That’s because their games tend to either be blowouts where he’s throwing a lot to catch up, or they’ve been very close games where he comes up short on the final drive, as he is just 7-26 (.212) at game-winning drive opportunities in his career, the worst record among active starters.
But given Houston’s struggles on offense to score a lot of points, this may not be a blowout week for the Cardinals, who are competitive despite the 3-10 record. It will be interesting to see how Brissett handles that pass rush and a hard-hitting secondary, so this may not be one of his prolific passing games as he takes on the No. 1 defense on the road.
Sunday, Dec. 14 | 1:00 PM ET | Las Vegas Raiders vs. Philadelphia Eagles (-11.5, O/U 38)
We’ll get a great sense on Sunday if the 2025 Eagles (8-5) are about to fully collapse in a bigger way than they did in 2023, or if they can finally end this three-game losing streak as a big home favorite against the struggling Las Vegas Raiders (2-11).
Maybe it’s just a Philadelphia thing, and that’s why it’s getting magnified. Still, there’s even a story floating around this week about benching quarterback Jalen Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, after his career-high four interceptions on Monday night against the Chargers. Hurts also became the first quarterback ever to throw an interception and lose a fumble on the same play, a double turnover.
Hurts has no doubt struggled this season, and it’s been a talking point since Week 1 how this team can disappear for a half, or how the offense is one of the worst at going three-and-out. But he’s not alone in the problems, which stem from a bad job by offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. For instance, Saquon Barkley is having one of the worst seasons ever after a 2,000-yard rushing season, so it’s not just the quarterback.
A.J. Brown also could have had some better efforts on passes Monday night against the Chargers, including an interception off his hands high, and then a possible dropped touchdown.
However, the Eagles are just 4-9 ATS in games following a loss since 2023, the season they collapsed after a 10-1 start and won only one more game before being eliminated in the playoffs. They still have a solid chance of winning the NFC East, but all bets are off if they blow this one to a Vegas team that has lost its last seven games. There’s little to offer here outside of targets to tight end Brock Bowers and Maxx Crosby’s effort on defense.
The Eagles have a great pass rush, as evidenced by their ability to get after Justin Herbert, sacking him a career-high 7 times on Monday night. Geno Smith has been under heavy pressure all year behind his offensive line, so it would take an incredible upset effort for the Raiders across country in an early body clock game to pull this one off.
However, the Eagles have flirted with complete collapse before, so Nick Sirianni and Hurts better figure this out against one of the worst teams in the NFL this season.
