Best Bet: Duke Over 6.5 wins
Duke made one of the most surprising splashes of the offseason when it added Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah.
Mensah was one of the breakout stars of the 2024 season, leading the Green Wave to a 9-4 season as a redshirt freshman.
Although it's a small step up in the level of competition for Mensah, he will be well supported at Duke, which boasts one of the nation’s best offensive lines.
According to Sports Info Solutions, Duke ranked eighth in the country in opponent-adjusted pressure rate allowed (Tulane ranked 96th).
The Blue Devils return four of those starters on the offensive line, and the left guard spot will be decided by a battle between two transfers with starting experience at the FCS level.
A trip to Clemson is likely to result in a loss, but Duke avoids Miami and SMU, and there is a decent chance the Blue Devils will be favored in every other conference game.
Best Bet: California Under 5.5 wins
If Cal had kept the roster together, there might be some optimism in Berkeley for the first time in years.
However, the transfer portal came calling for quarterback Fernando Mendoza (Indiana), running back Jaydn Ott (Oklahoma), tight end Jack Endries (Texas), and just about anyone with a pulse.
The schedule doesn’t make things any easier for the Golden Bears.
They will be on the road for half of their games, including cross-country trips to Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Louisville.
On the bright side, Cal avoids Clemson on the schedule, which looks like the only powerhouse in the ACC this season.
The defense has typically been a strength for Cal under head coach Justin Wilcox, but it looks like a rebuilding year on that side of the ball.
Cal ranked 42nd in opponent-adjusted pressure rate generated last year, per Sports Info Solutions, but lost three of its top four pass rushers to the portal or the NFL.
Best Bet: Virginia Over 6.5 wins
It’s been a long time since Virginia had something to get excited about on the football field, but Tony Elliott and his staff may have finally figured out the transfer portal.
Chandler Morris, formerly of Oklahoma, TCU, and North Texas, should stabilize the quarterback situation, which has been a weak link since Brennan Armstrong left the program.
Morris is likely to have a solid offensive line to play behind as well, thanks to the portal addition of Brady Wilson (UAB), Makilan Thomas (Arkansas State), and Monroe Mills (Louisville).
The most important reason to believe in the Cavaliers eclipsing this win total, however, is the schedule.
Somehow, Virginia managed to avoid Clemson, Miami, and SMU, the three strongest contenders for the ACC title.
Additionally, UVA does not have a single game in which its opponent is coming off a bye.
The team also benefits from having its byes preceding the Washington State and Virginia Tech games, two contests which could probably be considered toss ups.
Not only does Virginia benefit from byes before those games, but Washington State will be coming off a tough game against Ole Miss, while the Hokies face Miami the previous week.
