Giants vs. Eagles Fantasy Quarterback Preview
J.J. McCarthy
Heading into the bye, McCarthy made his first start with New York, completing 20 of 28 passes (71.4%) for 252 yards (9.0 Y/A).
He did not throw a touchdown or an interception, closing the week as the QB23 (10.2 points).
McCarthy averaged 9.5 air yards per attempt in Week 7, third in the league.
He went 7 of 12 (58.3%) for 196 yards (16.3 Y/A) on throws of 10 or more yards downfield against the Texans on the road.
Houston has allowed 51 pass plays of 15 or more yards (31st) and 29 pass plays of 20-plus yards (30th), so maybe this was just an extension of where they struggled, but McCarthy's first start with a team he had been with for less than a month was a huge success, even if gamers did not cash out fantasy points.
This was a solid start for McCarthy, but he still needs to string together a couple of these starts with fantasy output before jumping into the streaming conversion.
As we flesh out that sample, McCarthy is a QB2, but this matchup hasn't been as tough as we assumed entering the season.
McCarthy went 13 of 14 (92.9%) on throws shorter than 10 yards, too, so it wasn't just that he leaned on a handful of short plays connecting.
Even if McCarthy is reliant downfield, the Eagles have allowed a 57% completion rate on throws 10 or more yards downfield (27th).
Under pressure in Houston, McCarthy completed 10 of 14 passes (71.4%) for 100 yards (7.1 Y/A).
The Eagles are only getting pressure on 30.2% of dropbacks, 29th in the league.
When they do get pressure, the Eagles are allowing a league-best 35.2% completion rate, 4.9 yards per pass attempt (7th), and a 0% touchdown rate.
Without pressure, they are allowing 7.9 Y/A (24th) and a 5.9% touchdown rate (23rd).
Joe Milton
The Eagles are giving Milton a run as the starter this week in place of Tanner McKee.
Milton did not make an NFL start with New England or Dallas, completing 37 of 53 passes (69.8%) for 424 yards (8.0 Y/A) with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Taking over for Hendon Hooker at Tennessee, Milton had 650 career passes in college, but his 61.5% career completion percentage ranks in the 40th percentile of prospects since 2000.
Milton has an absolute hand cannon and offers some rushing appeal.
He has rushed 15 times for 66 yards and a touchdown in his appearances.
Milton has scrambled on 8.6% of his dropbacks.
That rushing ability makes him a more exciting QB2 than McKee was, since we weren't banking on high-end passing output here to begin with.
Especially if DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks remain out.
The Giants are allowing 192.1 passing yards per game, third in the league.
They have allowed just one quarterback to pass for 200-plus yards.
Before the bye, they faced a hot C.J. Stroud on the road and held him to 153 passing yards and 5.5 yards per pass attempt.
The Giants have gotten aggressive with blitzes to manufacture pressure.
They are now sixth in blitz rate (38.8%).
It has worked a bit, with 43.1% of their blitzes over the past three games generating pressure (15th).
When the Giants do get pressure, they are allowing a 37% completion rate (2nd) and 4.4 Y/A (3rd).
