The Steelers make that rare trip to Detroit to take on the Lions in a nearly must-win game for Detroit. Both teams are 8-6, but the Steelers lead the AFC North over Baltimore and have some leeway for the postseason. Pittsburgh could lose its next two games but still win the AFC North as long as it beats Baltimore at home in Week 18.
However, the Lions are in third place in the NFC North, behind the Packers (9-4-1) and Bears (10-4), who play on Saturday night. Detroit is coming off a 41-34 loss in Los Angeles, where Jared Goff and the offense didn’t turn the ball over, something it’s done an incredible job of this year despite losing coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears. The Lions have just eight giveaways, leading the league.
But could some turnover regression be on the menu for Jared Goff and company? The Pittsburgh defense has basically lived and died by turnovers this year. When they can force a handful against good teams like the Patriots and Colts, they won those games in upset fashion. But against some other contenders, they’ve really struggled and have been blown out after halftime.
It could also be harder for the Steelers to generate turnovers on the road if star edge rusher T.J. Watt is out again. He had a collapsed lung last week and missed the Miami game, which the Steelers won decisively without him, something they haven’t done in the past without Watt. However, it was freezing cold, and the Dolphins benched Tua Tagovailoa after that defeat.
This is the mighty Detroit offense in the dome. The Steelers are going to have to be on top of things offensively to keep up, and it’s a good thing Aaron Rodgers is starting to round into form in December. The offense has scored at least 27 points in four of the last five games, and Rodgers has been able to stack quality starts the last two weeks in wins over Baltimore and Miami. The Detroit secondary is still banged up, too, though Rodgers comes in loaded with tight ends and receiving backs and just one trustworthy wideout (D.K. Metcalf).
It should be a good one in Detroit.
Monday, Dec. 22 | 8:15 PM ET | San Francisco 49ers vs. Indianapolis Colts (+6.5, O/U 46.5)
While everyone is understandably focused on the Rams vs. Seahawks, who meet Thursday night in a big one, let’s not forget the San Francisco 49ers are 10-4 despite a ton of injuries. They’ve gotten some of those guys back, including Brock Purdy, and they already have a win in hand over the Seahawks and Rams this year.
Do not rule out a potential return to the Super Bowl, which is played in San Francisco’s stadium in February, as a last hurrah for this era of Kyle Shanahan’s team. They might be the quietest 10-4 team we’ve seen in a long time, and maybe part of that is the fact that they’ve been playing bad teams for the last month since Purdy’s return.
Well, they’re not getting a great opponent on Monday night, but the Colts were once 7-1 before injuries led to bringing 44-year-old Philip Rivers out of retirement. He almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NFL history, too, on the road in Seattle as a 14-point underdog. He led a go-ahead field goal drive, but because of the new kickoff rules, it wasn’t that hard for the Seahawks to get another field goal and win 18-16.
The market seems to have corrected for this, and the Colts are only a touchdown underdog at home to the 49ers, who are still missing Nick Bosa and Fred Warner on defense, two players who won’t be able to return this year. But they still have Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle playing well, and the offense has been humming for Shanahan while the Colts are down corner Sauce Gardner.
Rivers didn’t look like he could push the ball down the field last week, but maybe his second game will be better, and he only took one sack in Seattle. You can’t discount the veteran’s mind and knowing where to go with the ball.
