Saints vs. Giants Fantasy Quarterback Preview
Tyler Shough
It all came crashing down for Shough on Sunday against Minnesota.
He completed 16 of 25 passes (64%) for 96 yards (3.8 Y/A) and 2 interceptions.
That is the fewest yards per attempt of Shough's early career.
If your league counts turnovers as negative points, Shough actually scored negative points on the day.
Shough isn't the first quarterback Minnesota has wrecked this season, but Sunday highlighted this offense's bigger issues with pass protection and its reliance on absurd play volume.
After averaging 45 dropbacks per game coming into Sunday, Shough had 25 attempts.
Shough has now been pressured on 45.1% of his dropbacks since Kelvin Banks was injured, 27th in the league.
Under pressure over the past three weeks, Shough is averaging 4.2 yards per pass attempt, 25th in the league.
But even when Shough has had a clean pocket the past three weeks, his 6.5 yards per pass attempt ranks 24th.
The Giants are last in the league with a 25.8% pressure rate, but they did find a pass rush last weekend, getting to Jayden Daniels 5 times.
If the Giants start to find a pass rush, that would be intriguing, since they have played well on defense so far.
The Giants are allowing 6.5 yards per pass attempt (9th) and 9.9 yards per completion (5th).
When they pressure the opposing passer, they allow 3.8 yards per pass attempt (4th).
Matthew Stafford torched them in Week 2 while they were missing several secondary pieces.
But outside of that, they have not allowed a 200-yard passer in their other four games.
They have faced Jayden Daniels, Cam Ward, and Jacoby Brissett over the past three weeks, so we won't go crazy here, but they also held Dak Prescott to 5.1 Y/A and 175 passing yards in Week 1.
They've allowed fewer than 13 passing points to every quarterback other than Stafford.
The Giants also haven't faced many plays (5th fewest), which has led to 36.0 dropbacks per game (13th).
The Saints need that play volume.
The Giants have played in back-to-back fun-game environments despite not allowing many passing points.
They have played in games featuring 60 and 54 combined points against the Cardinals and Commanders, so I am not ruling out shootout potential here.
But New York's defensive metrics and the recent decline of the New Orleans offense add variables that make Shough a volatile QB1/QB2 option. I would prefer him as a QB2 rather than leaning on him in 1QB formats.
Jameis Winston
The past two weeks have been the Jameis Experience.
He has had weeks as the QB12 (18 points) and QB6 (25.9 points), throwing 3 touchdowns in each game.
Winston pulled a page out of Shough's book on Sunday, dropping back a league-high 60 times.
He had only 8.7 fantasy points through three quarters before going 18 of 27 for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime, for a league-high 17.2 fantasy points in the final quarter and extra time.
The Giants ran 12 personnel on a season-high 40.5% of snaps on Sunday.
50% of their passing plays were out of 12 personnel.
The previous high was 20% in Week 3.
Out of 12 personnel, Winston went 22 of 28 (78.6%) for 227 yards (8.1 Y/A) with a touchdown.
The Giants' 12 personnel is semi-fake because Isaiah Likely is not playing tight end.
Likely was inline for 4.5% of his snaps on Sunday.
We saw the Raiders do something similar to the Saints two weeks ago.
The Raiders threw out 12 personnel for 75% of their plays against the Saints in Week 3, going 15 of 25 for 160 yards (6.9 Y/A) with 2 touchdowns.
Likely is not Brock Bowers, but the Giants exploring angles to use him with Theo Johnson can create leverage points for the offense if defenses want to match with base personnel.
The Saints haven't been a good defense by any means, but they've allowed only one QB1 scoring week this season, and it required 3 touchdown passes.
That includes facing Jared Goff (16.4 points) and Lamar Jackson (14.8 points).
That said, there is nothing here from a matchup perspective to hide from.
The Saints are allowing a 70.6% completion rate (29th), 7.5 Y/A (23rd), and a 5.2% touchdown rate (20th).
While I am extremely open to this game getting weird with two “hair on fire” quarterbacks, these last two sections have at least shown the volatility.
If you are starting Winston for a Jared Goff or Joe Burrow on bye, then so be it.
I will be stacking this game both ways in DFS, but like Shough, I would prefer to use Winston as a boom-or-bust QB2 and take any upside outcome.
