Jets vs. Patriots Fantasy Quarterback Preview
Drake Maye
After a down start to the year, Maye has led all quarterbacks in scoring in each of the past two weeks.
He is coming off his best game of the year, carving up the Raiders for 374 passing yards and 4 touchdown passes, adding 25 yards and another score on the ground.
Maye threw from a clean pocket on a season-high 50% of his dropbacks.
On Sunday, Maye was 19 of 22 (86.4%) for 287 yards (13.0 Y/A) with 3 touchdowns without pressure.
Even during his struggles to start the year, Maye was good when he kept it clean.
Without pressure in Weeks 1-4, Maye completed 76% of his passes (QB15) for 8.0 yards per pass attempt (QB12).
Caleb Lomu stepped in at left tackle on Sunday after Will Campbell left the game with a knee injury.
Lomu played well, allowing only 1 pressure on 29 pass-blocking snaps.
The Patriots have started Ben Brown at right guard the past two weeks after using a combination of Greg Van Roten and Walter Rouse there after Mike Onwenu was lost to injury in Week 2.
This offensive line still isn't completely trustworthy, but Maye has worked his way back into upside QB1 status.
Operating from those clean pockets has matchup relevance here.
We are still trying to figure out where this Jets defense is.
The Jets have been an up-and-down defense to open the year based on opponent quality, but they haven't allowed a scoring week higher than QB16 through five weeks.
That was Jared Goff, who scored 19.4 points in a high-scoring week.
The Jets allowed 381 yards to Detroit and 492 yards to Chicago, but held the Titans (195 yards), Packers (199), and Browns (198) below 200.
They also played two rain-soaked games against the Packers and Browns.
Their pressure rates have also been more matchup-based.
The Jets had pressure rates of 48.9% against the Browns and 40% against the Titans.
Their rates were 27.8% against the Lions and Bears, and 25.7% against the Packers.
Without pressure, the Jets have allowed a 108.0 rating (21st), a 71.8% completion rate, 6 touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
With pressure, they have allowed a 39.1 rating (7th), a 37.2% completion rate, no touchdowns, and 1 interception.
The Jets play two-high coverage 62.2% of the time (5th).
This season, Maye has completed 55 of 76 passes (72.4%) for 10.0 Y/A (2nd) against two-high looks.
Geno Smith
Smith has logged only one QB1 scoring week so far this season, and it came in a comfortable spot against the Lions.
Outside of that, he has thrown 1 touchdown pass or fewer in his other four games.
The past two weeks, Smith has completed 53.3% and 56.7% of his passes.
Smith still hasn't thrown an interception, but 19.3% of his dropbacks have lost 1.0 EPA or worse (24th) because he's taken 16 sacks (29th).
To be fair to Smith, he's also played two rain-soaked games, and the Jets have missed playmakers Adonai Mitchell and Breece Hall for most of the past three games.
There is a shot that not only Hall is back this week, but also Omar Cooper.
That said, it is still hard to handle Smith as more than a floor-based QB2 and take any spike that comes.
The Patriots are allowing 12.5 passing points per game (12th).
New England has allowed 6.9 Y/A (13th) and a 3.7% touchdown rate (12th).
We still have to track the status of Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis going into the weekend.
Both missed last week's game, while Gonzalez has missed the past two weeks.
Even without both, the Patriots have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in a single game.
