Motivation or Rest Alert
The 49ers can lock up a playoff spot with a win and still potentially backdoor into the postseason with a loss if the Saints also lose. We know they’re going to pursue the former scenario and have won five in a row against the Rams.
The Rams can clinch the NFC West with a win here or a loss by the Cardinals. Playing for home field in the first round, the Rams will play things out.
Quarterback
Matthew Stafford: Stafford has been a QB2 the past two weeks, playing far from his best football against suspect defenses in the Vikings (6.7 points) and the Ravens (14.3 points). Turnovers have been Stafford’s biggest bugaboo over the second half of the season, throwing 11 interceptions over the past eight games after four over his opening eight games. In the six games that Stafford that has not thrown an interception, he has been a top-nine fantasy scorer in all six. In the other 10 games, he has three top-12 finishes with seven games as the QB15 or lower.
One of those was against San Francisco in Week 10, when Stafford was 26-of-41 for 243 yards (5.9 Y/A) and one touchdown and two interceptions (9.8 fantasy points). The 49ers are 10th in passing points allowed per game (13.8), but they are 20th in points allowed per attempt (0.44) if looking for an out. Stafford is a backend QB1 play heading into the end of the season.
