- New Orleans is a league-worst 2-7 against the spread this season (.222).
- Carolina is 6-3 against the spread (.667), tied for third in the league. All of those games were as underdogs.
- Carolina has led on 21.8% of its offensive plays, the lowest rate among teams with a winning record (26th in the league).
- The Saints have trailed for a league-high 87.2% of their offensive snaps.
- The Saints are 31st in the league in the rate of passing plays to gain 10 or more yards (21.1%).
- Carolina is 30th at 21.3%.
- New Orleans has turned the ball over on a league-high 32.3% of their drives over the past three weeks after a 6.5% rate prior (7th).
- Carolina has allowed a 38.5% touchdown rate (5 of 13) on red zone trips over the past four weeks (4th) after a 62.5% rate (10 of 16) prior (21st).
Trust = spike production for that player
Quarterback
Bryce Young: Young returned to the lineup on Sunday after missing Week 8 with an ankle injury.
Young was not asked to do much in Green Bay, connecting on 11 of 20 passes for 102 yards with an interception.
Young has thrown for more than 200 yards just once this season.
His 5.7 yards per pass attempt are ahead of only Dillon Gabriel (4.9 Y/A).
Carolina is not asking much from this passing game.
Young has thrown the ball 10 or more yards downfield on 27.9% of his passes, 28th in the league.
7% of his passes have traveled 20 or more air yards, ahead of only Gabriel (5.6%).
The Panthers are 30th in dropback rate in neutral-game scripts (55%) and 30th in dropback rate (41.9%) when playing with a lead.
As a favorite here, Carolina may not ask Young to do much to push him as a potential streamer, leaving him as a QB2.
If the Panthers do throw, the matchup is a good one.
The Saints are 26th in pressure rate (31.3%).
They are allowing 7.3 yards per pass attempt (25th) and are 29th in passing points allowed per attempt (0.549).
39% of the pass attempts against New Orleans have resulted in a first down or touchdown, 30th in the league.
What has saved them from allowing tons of fantasy points is that they have trailed so much that opponents have the lowest pass rate against them, which is how Carolina has inherently wanted to operate this season.
Tyler Shough: Shough’s first career start came in a tough spot, and the results matched the layout.
He completed 15 of 24 passes for 176 yards with a touchdown and an interception, ending the week as QB23 (9.2 points).
When pressured, Shough did not complete a pass (0 of 5) with an interception.
He is now 1 of 12 for 6 yards the past two weeks when pressured.
Shough is stuck as a back-end QB2, but the pass rush should not be a primary concern here.
Carolina is last in the NFL in pressure rate (26.4%).
The Panthers play passive defense, with the league's lowest man-coverage rate (11.5%).
Shough has completed 26 of 43 passes (60.5%) for 241 yards (5.6 Y/A) with 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions against zone coverages so far.
We are still working with a small sample.
This is a lighter matchup in terms of production allowed compared to the Rams, but Carolina has allowed only 6.9 yards per pass attempt (14th) and a 3.9% touchdown rate to passers (10th).
