49ers vs. Seahawks Fantasy Quarterback Preview

Brock Purdy

This is the strength-on-strength matchup of the week.

Purdy is second in the NFL in yards per pass attempt (8.9), third in yards per completion (12.7), first in touchdown rate (9.7%), and third in rate of throws to result in a first down or touchdown (44.2%).

Seattle allows 5.2 yards per pass attempt (2nd), 8.3 yards per completion (1st), and a first down or touchdown on 25.8% of attempts (2nd).

On throws 10 or more yards downfield, passers have completed a league-low 33.3% (10 of 30) of throws with 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions against the Seahawks.

Purdy has faced the Rams and Broncos so far, and although he has worked hard in those matchups, he was QB10 (21.1 points) against the Rams and QB8 (19.6 points) against the Broncos.

The Rams held him to 205 passing yards (6.0 Y/A), but he got over with 3 touchdown passes.

The Broncos held him to 218 passing yards (7.3 Y/A), but he threw 2 touchdowns, boosted by a late 56-yard screen to George Kittle on his final throw of the game.

Touchdown production is the angle here for Purdy, similar to Marcus Mariota in Week 3 versus Seattle.

Purdy has also anchored his fantasy games this season via rushing as another way to produce points.

He has rushed for 29, 30, 34, and 29 yards each week this season.

Seattle allowed 47 rushing yards to Drake Maye in Week 1 and 40 rushing yards to Justin Herbert on Sunday.

Purdy has faced Mike Macdonald five times over the past two seasons.

The 49ers have scored 36 points in the first matchup between these teams, with Purdy throwing for 255 yards (9.1 Y/A) and 3 touchdowns.

Since then, the 49ers have scored 17 or fewer points in each of the past four matchups.

In these matchups under Macdonald, Purdy has averaged only 6.6 yards per pass attempt, with 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

He has thrown for 200 yards in two of the five matchups.

Overall, Purdy is averaging only 13.9 fantasy points per game in those meetings, with single-digit points in each of the past two.

To be fair to Purdy, Kittle was not available for the last matchup, and he didn't have Mike Evans or Deebo Samuel.

As was the case last week, I am not actively looking to bench Purdy for a streamer, but this is another week where we will enter with lowered expectations as a fringe QB1.

Sam Darnold

Darnold was not sharp on Sunday against the Chargers, completing 13 of 22 passes (59.1%) for 168 yards (7.6 Y/A) with 2 touchdowns and an interception.

This is another spot where Darnold is more of a QB2.

The San Francisco pass defense has been excellent to start the season.

The 49ers are allowing 5.9 yards per pass attempt (3rd), 9.1 yards per completion (3rd), and a 2.8% touchdown rate (4th).

29% of the passes against San Francisco have resulted in a first down or touchdown (5th).

Under Raheem Morris, the 49ers have taken away the middle of the field and forced teams to throw short and underneath.

Passers are averaging 6.0 air yards per attempt against the 49ers (3rd lowest), and they have thrown between the numbers at a 28.3% rate (5th lowest).

Darnold has thrown 60.8% of his passes between the numbers (2nd).

On throws of 10 or more yards downfield, the 49ers have allowed a 35.9% completion rate (14 of 39), second to Seattle.

On throws 10 or more yards downfield, Darnold is 17 of 23 (73.9%) for 287 yards (12.5 Y/A).

Now, Darnold has a few potential pros.

The 49ers have had a 28.9% pressure rate the past two weeks without Nick Bosa (27th in the league).

When Darnold has been pressured, he has the league's worst rating (16.8), completing 8 of 26 attempts (30.8%) for 5.1 Y/A with 2 interceptions.

Without pressure, he is second in rating (138.0), completing 86% (37 of 43) of his throws for 10.0 Y/A with 6 touchdowns.

Darnold also had success against Morris when he was with Atlanta last season.

In that game, Darnold was 20 of 30 (66.7%) for 249 yards (8.3 Y/A) with 3 touchdowns.
