Week 2 of the NFL season kicked off with another Thursday night thriller and Washington prevailed in the NFC East clash.

As we turn our attention to Sunday, there are a number of key players who have moved to the Injured Reserve or the reserve/COVID-19 list. As for the players still occupying active roster spots, here’s a breakdown of their participation in practice this week and analysis of what this could mean for Sunday:

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers; 1:00 PM

– The Saints defense is all sorts of banged up with Kwon Alexander and Marcus Davenport headed to the IR and Marshon Lattimore considered questionable after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

The Saints defense will be tested over the middle going against Christian McCaffrey, who caught nine passes for 89 yards in Week 1. Demario Davis remains New Orleans’s best coverage linebacker, allowing just seven yards on two completions last week.

– Bradley Roby was activated from the reserved/suspended list this week so that can help the thinning secondary, but Lattimore remaining a game-time decision looms large.

– The Panthers are healthy, especially with right guard John Miller getting activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday. Despite Miller’s assumed health, Matt Rhule told reporters that Dennis Daley will be ready to fill in if Miller is unable to play the entire game.

Daley struggled in Week 1 against the Jets, ranking in the bottom-six among guards according to Pro Football Focus’s pass-blocking grades.

– Starting right tackle Charlie Heck returns from the reserve/COVID-19 list this week. Marcus Cannon played well in his absence against Jacksonville, allowing zero pressures.

Kamu Grugier-Hill was a late addition to the injury report, missing Friday’s session with an illness. The bad news for hyphenated linebackers didn’t stop there as Kevin Pierre-Louis was placed on the IR with a thigh injury.

Former Packer Christian Kirksey and Zach Cunningham will be the Texans’ starting linebackers on Sunday as Houston tries to stifle the one-two punch of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.

– The Browns’ left tackle situation will be the biggest question mark heading into Sunday with starter Jedrick Wills Jr. listed as questionable and backup Chris Hubbard out with a triceps injury.

Hubbard was a disaster in Week 1, allowing a sack and three quarterback pressures in limited action. If Wills cannot go, rookie fourth-round pick James Hudson will be tasked with protecting Baker Mayfield’s blindside against a defense that ranks 23rd in pass-rush efficiency.

– Odell Beckham Jr. was a game-time decision in Week 1 and was ruled out after warm ups. However, Cleveland is helping us out this week, ruling him out early. Beckham hasn’t necessarily seen a setback in his recovery, but the Browns have been cautious with his recovery from the beginning. Beckham being a full-go in Week 3 wouldn’t be shocking.

– With Jerry Jeudy on the IR, expect K.J. Hamler to get extended time in the slot. The former second-round pick leads Broncos wide receivers in targets after Week 1.

Graham Glasgow is doubtful as he deals with a heart issue. Netane Muti is in line to make his second-career NFL start on Sunday. He struggled in limited action as a rookie last season, but did turn heads in training camp. Jacksonville led the NFL in quarterback pressures in Week 1.

Tre Herndon will miss his second-straight game as he deals with an MCL injury which means rookie Tyson Campbell will make his second-straight start after being limited with a calf injury earlier in the week.

Campbell struggled mightily in his NFL debut, allowing five completions for 80 yards and a touchdown on five targets. Campbell was one of three cornerbacks to surrender a perfect passer rating when targeted in Week 1.

– The loss of Kyle Van Noy will make a huge impact on the Patriots. Van Noy was credited with a sack and three of the Pats’ five quarterback pressures in Week 1.

2020 second-round pick Josh Uche will need to step up in Van Noy’s absence. He did notch a sack in Week 1, but started just one game as a rookie.

– If Trent Brown’s calf hinders him from starting, expect Justin Herron to start in his place. Brown’s calf was an issue last season as well, so this is something worth monitoring long-term.

– The pass rush could also be an issue for Vegas if Carl Nassib and Yannick Ngakoue can’t go. Clelin Ferrell was a healthy scratch last week, but could get some big snaps if Nassib or Ngakoue are out.

– Cincinnati enters Week 2 with a thin secondary. Trae Waynes is out for the second-straight week and Ricardo Allen is stashed on the IR, nursing a hand injury.

Eli Apple and Vonn Bell are expected to start for the Bengals. The duo struggled in Week 1, allowing completions on all 13 of their targets for 133 yards and a touchdown.

– Left tackle is a huge question mark for the Bears this week. Teven Jenkins will be on the IR for the foreseeable future and Larry Borom never made it to practice this week after suffering an ankle injury in Week 1.

That leaves 39-year-old Jason Peters who started last week, but couldn’t make it halftime before bowing out with a quad injury. Peters has become anything but reliable in recent years, spending eight weeks on the IR in 2020 and missing time in four of the eight games he suited up for.

– The 49ers run of bad injury luck has carried over from 2020 as they will play Week 2 without either of their starting cornerbacks while also missing a linebacker and their leading rusher.

Josh Norman and Dontae Johnson are in the mix to start opposite Deommodore Lenior. Dre Kirkpatrick also started practicing with the team this week, but it would be surprising to see him step into a big role so early.

– Offensively, Elijah Mitchell carried the 49ers rushing attack in Week 1, but Kyle Shanahan could give touches to Trey Sermon, who was a healthy scratch last week. JaMycal Hasty and the recently acquired Trenton Cannon are the other two running backs on the roster.

– The Eagles are thin at safety again with Rodney McLeod still not fully recovered from a torn ACL suffered last season. Add in Marcus Epps’s concussion and all signs point to K’Von Wallace making his first start of the season.

The former fourth-round pick out of Clemson spent most of his rookie season as an in-the-box safety, but with the Eagles running a lot more two high safety looks under Jonathan Gannon, Wallace could find himself all over the field on Sunday as the Eagles try to neutralize George Kittle.

– The big news for the Vikings is the loss of Everson Griffin who suffered a concussion this week in a car accident. Add in Anthony Barr being out with a knee injury and the Vikings will play on Sunday without two starters up front.

Second-year vet D.J. Wonnum will start for Griffin after playing 47 snaps in Week 1 and securing just one tackle. Blake Lynch will fill in for Barr after grading out as one of Minnesota’s top defenders on PFF last week.

– Still no Christian Darrisaw, which means Rashod Hill will start at left tackle again this week, tasked with stopping Chandler Jones after he destroyed Taylor Lewan for five sacks in Week 1. Hill allowed two pressures on 61 pass-blocking snaps last week against the Bengals.

– The Buccaneers are relatively healthy again this season, although Carlton Davis popping up on the Friday injury report with a hamstring injury could be worrisome. With Sean Murphy-Bunting already on the IR, it’s possible Tampa Bay could be without both of their starting cornerbacks in Week 2.

Jamel Dean is already slated to fill in for Murphy-Bunting. Dean started all four of the Bucs playoff games last season. If Davis is out, veteran Ross Cockrell could get the nod. He spent most of Week 1 in the slot, allowing seven catches and a touchdown.

Rashaad Penny missing Sunday’s game would be good news for Chris Carson fans. Carson dominated the backfield touches in Week 1 after Penny went down, out-carrying DeeJay Dallas 16 to one.

– Despite Pete Carroll telling reporters that starting left guard Damien Lewis practiced on Friday, the Seahawks corrected the coach and said he sat out. Lewis struggled in Week 1, but his potential replacement, Dakoda Shepley, has just five special teams snaps of NFL experience.

– The two biggest losses for the Cowboys are both sitting on the IR. Demarcus Lawrence has a foot injury and Michael Gallup is dealing with a calf issue.

With Lawrence out and Randy Gregory with a slim chance of being activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to Sunday, Dallas’s top pass rushers this week could be Tarell Basham and Dorance Armstrong. Basham notched 3.5 sacks for the Jets last season.

Cedrick Wilson gets elevated into the starting lineup with Gallup out, but expect most of Gallup’s chances to be divvied up between Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb, who combined for 31 targets in Week 1.

– The loss of Bryan Bulaga won’t be magnified too much this week, considering Dallas is running dangerously low on pass rushers. Storm Norton will start at right tackle for the Chargers, he allowed just one sack in 194 pass-blocking snaps during the 2020 season.

– Perhaps more urgent is the Chargers thinning secondary, especially if Nasir Adderley is ruled out. Asante Samuel Jr. will start in Chris Harris Jr.’s spot, but that leaves the rookie with a three-inch, 25-pound size deficit.

Per Brandon Staley, Derwin James will play in the slot on Sunday and that leaves Mark Webb Jr. as the next option to possibly fill-in for Adderley if Alohi Gilman is already taking the other safety spot.

– It’s hard to know where to start with the Ravens, who seem to lose a starter to injury everyday. Tyre Phillips landed on the IR this week and will be replaced by Ben Powers, who struggled in Week 1 after a solid 2020.

– Already housing two receivers on the IR, the Ravens have two more starters listed as questionable, leaving the only fully-healthy receivers on the roster to be Sammy Watkins, James Proche II and Tylan Wallace.

– And perhaps most concerning is the secondary, where both starting cornerbacks are questionable and four others are on the IR, including Marcus Peters. Tavon Young is mainly a slot corner, leaving Anthony Averett as the only backup option if Marlon Humphery or Jimmy Smith are inactive.
