Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.
Let's look at how the Jacksonville Jaguars performed from a penalty perspective in 2024 and where they can improve in 2025.
How Did Penalties Impact the Jacksonville Jaguars?
The Good
- The Jaguars ranked 25th overall in penalties per game and 27th in penalties per game at home. Despite limited success in recent seasons, the Jaguars consistently rank among the least penalized teams, and 2024 was no different.
- The Jaguars offense accounted for 41% of the team's penalties. The league average is 51.7% in this category. In raw numbers, the Jaguars ranked as a bottom-three penalized offensive unit in the NFL last season.
The Bad
- The Jaguars defense accounted for 44% of the team's overall penalties, significantly higher than the league average of 34.5% on defenses.
- The Jaguars ranked No.1 for defensive offsides penalties.
- The Jaguars offense was inept at generating beneficial automatic first downs via penalty, ranking 32nd in the NFL. This represented a huge dropoff in productivity compared to previous seasons for this offense.
- Compounding the Jaguars' issues from the aforementioned automatic first downs, only 21% of automatic first downs were generated on third down, below the league average of 31.8% in this category.
Grade: B-
There are a lot of positive vibes swirling around Jacksonville, with the franchise’s front office and coaching staff undergoing major changes in the offseason.
Rookie head coach Liam Coen needs this team to hit the ground running, with four of Jacksonville’s first six games being played at home followed by their annual London game.
Taking advantage of a favorable early schedule is essential if the Jaguars intend to be in the playoff hunt later in the season.
The Jaguars seem to be on the right trajectory, and drafting rookie phenom Travis Hunter will make this team must see TV, at least in the early part of the season.
The Jaguars hired Coen to unlock Trevor Lawrence’s full potential, and the level of success that partnership is able to achieve will ultimately determine the team's ceiling in 2025 and beyond.
