Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.

Let's look at how the Los Angeles Rams performed from a penalty perspective in 2024 and where they can improve in 2025.

How Did Penalties Impact the Los Angeles Rams?

The Good

  • The Rams ranked 28th in penalties per game and 29th in pre-snap penalties per game.
  • The Rams averaged 4.89 penalties per game on the road, the lowest of any team in 2024. That will be key in 2025 with the Rams having nine road contests.
  • The Rams offense was a top-three beneficiary of defensive pass interference penalties. The addition of Davante Adams strengthens an already solid unit.
  • The offense was a top 10 beneficiary of automatic first downs via penalties, with the bulk of these generated on second and third down plays.
  • The Rams defense surrendered a below average rate of automatic first downs via penalties, ranking in the bottom third of all defensive units in 2024.

The Bad

  • The Rams surrendered an above average 8.9 yards per infraction. The league average is 8.1 yards per penalty.

Grade: A

After falling short to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, the Rams have strategically added key players in the offseason.

If there is a weak link on the team, it would be their offensive line. The starters are a solid unit, but they cannot afford to sustain significant injuries up front.

The Rams boast a potential top-five defense with a ton of young talent that still has significant upside moving forward.

That's complemented by a potentially explosive offense with one of the best wide receiving corps in the NFL. This is all orchestrated by one of the NFL’s elite coaches.

Those factors add up to a Rams team in prime position to make a deep playoff run in 2025, with a legitimate chance to win their second Super Bowl in the Sean McVay era.
