I didn't expect much, to be honest with you, out of the pairing of Justin Fields and Aaron Glenn in New York with the Jets, but we are seeing some flashes of opportunity here, even though it's not being executed very well at all.
I think that there could be some improvements made.
In the first half of the game against the Cowboys, look at the success rates.
Passing (out of 26 QBs):
#25 accuracy
#20 EPA per attempt (-0.21)
#18 success rate (41%)
#21 completion rate (57%)
#22 yards per attempt (5.3)
Rushing:
#2 in yards per carry (7.1)
#5 in success rate (50%)
#18 in EPA (-0.18) only because of a fumble
#2 yards before contact per rush on RB runs (2.3)
Yet, the Jets were 15th in pass rate rather than leaning more into the run to force the Cowboys to stop them.
This performance was a microcosm of the season.
Justin Fields in the first half of games, out of 40 QBs:
#37 in accuracy
#26 in EPA per attempt (-0.02)
#23 in yards per attempt (6.5)
#32 in completion rate (61%)
#39 in sack rate (12%)
1 total TD
Fields in the second half of games:
#2 in accuracy
#13 in EPA per attempt (+0.19)
#19 in yards per attempt (7.5)
#11 in completion rate (71%)
#17 in sack rate (6%)
6 total TDs
I don't think Fields is a winning quarterback, and I haven't thought that for a while now, but they have opportunities in some of these games to make winning plays and to make them earlier in the game to give themselves a better chance later in the game.
From coaching, game planning, scheming, designing, and encouraging, they're just not doing it at all levels.
They need to get it turned around quickly, or Fields and his head coach could be in hot water.
