Quarterback Depth Chart, 49ers:

  1. Brock Purdy
  2. Joshua Dobbs
  3. Brandon Allen

Brock Purdy not only repeated his late-season success as a rookie, but he exceeded it.

Purdy was among the league leaders in almost every passing metric in his first full season as a starter.

He led all passers in rating (113.0), yards per pass attempt (9.6 Y/A), EPA per dropback (0.26), success rate (53.0%), touchdown rate (7.0%), and the rate of pass attempts to result in a first down or touchdown (43.2%).

The only blemish was that Purdy’s 2.5% interception rate ranked 24th.

Even if you want to attribute his environment to part of Purdy’s success, he still has been the best quarterback in this system over Kyle Shanahan‘s time in San Francisco.

Purdy is only making $1 million and $1.1 million over the two remaining years on his rookie contract to go along with that, making him arguably the league’s largest value-based player.

Purdy’s current contract allowed San Francisco to keep pushing while their window is open.

The 49ers have now played in the NFC Title Game in four of the past five seasons, reaching the Super Bowl twice.

Losing backup Sam Darnold in free agency, the 49ers added Joshua Dobbs.

Dobbs had one of his better games last season in San Francisco, throwing for 265 yards and two touchdowns when the Cardinals played the 49ers in Week 4. Dobbs also added 48 yards rushing in that game.

Running Back Depth Chart, 49ers:

  1. Christian McCaffrey
  2. Elijah Mitchell
  3. Jordan Mason
  4. Patrick Taylor
  5. Kyle Juszczyk (FB)

Chrisitan McCaffrey continued to be the best at this position in 2023.

McCaffrey led the NFL in touches (339), rushing yards (1,459), yards from scrimmage (2,023), and tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns.

He finished third in MVP voting.

McCaffrey has now played 33 games with the 49ers, scoring 39 touchdowns (with a passing touchdown) in those games.

He has played in just six games with the 49ers in which he has not scored a touchdown.

McCaffrey is signed through 2025.

The rest of the running back room is only signed for the 2024 season, except fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who is signed through 2025.

The team does have restricted free-agent rights on Jordan Mason after the season.

Wide Receiver Depth Chart, 49ers:

  1. Deebo Samuel
  2. Brandon Aiyuk
  3. Jauan Jennings
  4. Chris Conley
  5. Danny Gray
  6. Ronnie Bell
  7. Tay Martin
  8. Trent Taylor

Deebo Samuel had a strong 2023 season when available.

Samuel had 97 touches for 1,117 yards from scrimmage to go along with 12 touchdowns.

As a receiver, Samuel averaged 14.9 yards per catch and 59.5 receiving yards per game, both of which were the second-highest totals of his career.

His seven receiving touchdowns were a career-high.

After averaging a career-low 6.7 yards per target in 2022, Samuel bounced back with 10.0 yards per target last season, which was also the second-highest rate of his career.

As a rusher, Samuel remained a unique chess piece at his position, rushing 37 times for 225 yards and another five touchdowns.

Samuel is still under contract for the next two seasons.

Brandon Aiyuk just continues to get better each season in the league.

Aiyuk’s yardage has climbed from the season prior in each season, punctuated by him producing 1,342 yards in 2023 to go with seven touchdowns.

Currently only under contract on his fifth-year option, Aiyuk has been a buzz-worthy name the past few weeks as he looks to cash in on a large contract extension.

There were rumors that Aiyuk had asked for a trade, but not from anyone with credentials.

What happens during the draft next week could provide some added signal in which direction that the 49ers decide to go, but Aiyuk has been one of the best wide receivers in the league per opportunity.

In 2023, Aiyuk led all wide receivers with a first down or touchdown on 58.1% of his targets.

His 3.06 yards per route run was third at the position.

Since entering the league in 2020, Aiyuk has the highest EPA per target (0.43) among wide receivers to play multiple seasons. The only other wide receiver with a higher rate is Puka Nacua (0.48).

Jauan Jennings has been a reliable WR3 for a team that does not play a lot of 3WR sets.

San Francisco retained Jennings as a restricted free agent for 2024, but he is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Pending an extension for Aiyuk, the only other wide receivers that San Francisco currently has signed beyond this season outside of Samuel are Ronnie Bell and Danny Gray.
