Penalties are an under-discussed aspect of NFL success and failure. Average teams can become playoff contenders with good discipline, and good teams can become great simply by winning the penalty battle.
Let's look at how the Philadelphia Eagles performed from a penalty perspective in 2025 and where they can improve in 2026.
Philadelphia Eagles 2026 Penalty Outlook: Discipline, Flags & Hidden Edges
The Good
- Philadelphia’s offense accounted for a below-average 46% of the team's penalties.
- Offensive holding and false start accounted for 38% of the team’s overall penalties, right in line with the league average in 2025, which is impressive considering the offensive line injuries that plagued this team last season.
The Bad
- A league-leading 61% of overall penalties assessed in the second half of Philadelphia contests were on the Eagles. That represents a huge year-over-year swing compared to 2024, when only 46% of second-half penalties were assessed on Philadelphia.
- The Eagles ranked No. 1 in net negative penalties per game, by far their worst performance in this category in the Nick Sirianni era.
- The Eagles averaged the most third-down penalty yards per game in 2025, averaging almost 20 yards per contest on third down.
- The defense was the perfect mixture of dominance plus a minimally penalized unit in their Super Bowl season. That wasn't the case last season, where we saw a spike in penalty averages across a variety of metrics, although we can point to the offensive ineptitude placing excess pressure on the defense as a major cause of the elevated numbers.
- The defense was a top-five unit in surrendering automatic first downs via penalties.
- The Eagles had a major decline in beneficial automatic first downs via penalty, recording the second-biggest swing from positive to negative territory from 2024 to 2025. Only the Miami Dolphins recorded a larger swing in this category last season.
Grade: C+
Philadelphia succumbed to history by failing to repeat as Super Bowl champions off the back of their dominant 2024 campaign.
However, the collection of talent on the Eagles roster is among the best in the NFL.
For as long as Vic Fangio runs the defense, the Eagles will be a top-10 unit in the NFL on that side of the ball.
Offensively is where the problems persist for the Eagles, meaning the pressure is immense on new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
Likewise for Jalen Hurts in the aftermath of Philadelphia trading away A.J. Brown.
This team possesses too much talent not to be in the championship mix, but success in Philadelphia will ultimately be contingent on the offense getting its groove back and clicking on all cylinders in the playoffs.
