Game Overview
The late game on Saturday night is a rematch from Week 9 when these teams played in Germany.
Kansas City won that matchup 21-14, going up 21-0 at the half and holding onto the win.
Two weeks ago, Miami controlled their destiny to secure the No. 2 seed in the AFC, but they lost each of their final two games to drop to the No. 6 seed.
The Dolphins have had immense highs this season.
They are third in the NFL in points per drive (2.52) and second in the league in scoring a touchdown on 30.6% of their drives.
But they also provided a limited resume of punching up.
Miami played six games this season against teams with a winning record, the fewest in the league.
They went 1-5 in those games.
The Chiefs are in a similar position.
Kansas City played just seven games against teams with a winning record (going 3-4) and played just five games against 2023 playoff teams.
The Chiefs were 1-4 in those games, with that lone win coming against Miami.
Kansas City scored 1.3 fewer offensive touchdowns this season than they did in 2022, the largest drop-off for any team in the league from last season to this year.
The Chiefs particularly had trouble scoring after halftime this season, something that we saw almost catch up to them when these teams played earlier in the season.
The Chiefs scored a touchdown on 13.5% of their possessions in the second half of games this season, ahead of only the Raiders (11.6%) and Jets (10.0%).
The good news for Kansas City is that they have the best defense of the Andy Reid–Patrick Mahomes era.
The Chiefs allowed a league-low 3.0 scoring plays per game.
Kansas City allowed the fewest yards per play on third down this season (3.6).
Miami averaged a league-high 7.7 yards per play on third down, but when these teams played in Week 9, the Dolphins had just 3.8 yards per play on third down.
In that game, Miami converted a season-low 25.0% (3-of-12) of their third downs.
This will be the 12th home playoff game for the Chiefs with Mahomes as their starting quarterback.
They are 9-2 in those games, with both losses coming in overtime.
Miami was 4-3 on the road this season.
Miami was 1-5 this season as an underdog, with their lone win as a dog coming in the season opener against the Chargers.
