Wide Receiver Fantasy Football ADP: Historical Data
The correlation between average draft position and points per game for wide receivers is below that of the running back position.
The first thing that stands out when examining the image above is that the majority of elite seasons for wideouts are tied to front-end draft capital, much like for running backs.
45 wide receivers here have averaged 20 or more PPR points per game in our sample.
32 of those seasons came from wide receivers selected in the top 10 at the position.
Only five of those were receivers selected outside of the top 24.
25 of those seasons came from wideouts selected as WR6 or higher.
Not pictured due to WR67 ADP, but Odell Beckham in 2014 was the only season averaging 20-plus points per game that was selected outside of the top 36 wide receivers in ADP.
In 2025, the two wideouts to hit 20-plus points per game were Puka Nacua (WR6 in ADP) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (WR14).
We talked about this with the running backs, but you have to “pay to play” for front-end scoring seasons.
Paired with the recent trends of leading wideouts gaining more opportunities moving around formations and the reduction of 3WR sets, you are incentivized to get in early if you are looking to run into high-end scorers.
While our top-down sample shows a solid correlation between ADP and points per game compared to the running back position, 2025 was another challenging year for drafting wideouts.

Last season, the correlation between ADP and per-game scoring was the weakest it has been since 2010 for top-36 and top-12 receivers.
The past two seasons are the lowest two years in the sample for top-36 picks at the position.
With WR1 picks (top 12) having their worst season, correlating draft capital to fantasy points per game, and RB1 picks having their best season since 2010 last year, there is a clear reason why gamers are pushing running backs up the board this offseason.
Whereas RB1 picks last year only had one true flop, wide receiver was littered with busts.
CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Ladd McConkey all were top 12 selections who finished 18 more spots below their ADP in terms of seasonal scoring.
If we extend things out to wideouts taken as top-24 picks, only six of those picks beat their positional ADP at season’s end.
Those wideouts were Puka Nacua, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Courtland Sutton, and DeVonta Smith.
Tyreek Hill, Terry McLaurin, Mike Evans, Garrett Wilson, Marvin Harrison Jr, DJ Moore, and Xavier Worthy were all WR2 draft picks who finished 15 or more spots below draft investment within the position.
If pairing together all of those misses from the top two tiers at the position, the thing that stands out immediately is how ravaged the position was last year.
We covered yesterday that top-end running backs stayed healthier last year.
That was not the case for wideouts.

Top-24 wideouts combined for 85 games missed last year.
The next-closest season in the sample above for games missed by that subset of receivers was 69.
Whereas eight of the top 12 running backs last year played full seasons, only six of the top 24 wide receiver picks played a full season in 2025.
Only two top-12 receivers (St. Brown and Jefferson) played in every game.
This is the second year in a row where WR2 picks were just bludgeoned.
The two highest totals for missed games among WR2 picks since 2010 have been back-to-back years.
There were, and always will be, flops outside of injuries last year among top receiver picks, but the cleanest way to balance the scales this season between top wideouts and running backs is for both sides to get closer to the mean in average injury rates, after the two sides were on opposite ends last season.
With the lousy runout up top, we of course had a plethora of later hits at the position.
George Pickens (WR29 in ADP), Chris Olave (WR35), Zay Flowers (WR26), Michael Wilson (WR81), and Jameson Williams (WR27) all finished as top 12 scorers on the season and were selected outside of the top 24.
Troy Franklin (WR83 in ADP), Wan’Dale Robinson (WR63), Alec Pierce (WR75), Quentin Johnston (WR69), and Romeo Doubs (WR65) also all finished as top 36 scorers while being selected outside of the top 60 at the position.
Wide Receivers vs. Running Backs
One of the biggest dilemmas drafters face is when to target wide receivers and running backs relative to their positions.
Your scoring format and draft room will dictate the costs of each position, but from an arbitrary standpoint, we can take a look under the hood to shed light on how each position level performs relative to its counterpart.

RB1 picks have been better than WR1 picks nearly across the board in terms of players matching ADP and producing top-end seasons.
WR1 picks have had a higher rate of producing top-6 scoring campaigns compared to running backs, but that is their only edge.
Taking running backs early still works in fantasy football because it targets the part of the draft where the gap between running backs and wide receivers has historically been the tightest.
When you pair those edges with the support that an elite running back usually carries more positional leverage than an elite wide receiver, there is a strong reason why top running backs should be valued highly.
Paired with the current NFL landscape where passing volume has been reduced, it is clear why running backs are pushed back up to the front of drafts.
Our rankings also reflect this, and they differ from the ADP landscape. We are higher on the back end of the RB1 room compared to the mid-to-back WR1 picks.
When we get into the WR2 level of required draft capital, WR2 (WRs 13-24) options are the most stable buys in matching their cost out of any subset of wide receivers.
Compared to their RB2 peers, they are just better in every department.
The past two years have been tough on this group due to the aforementioned injuries, but as we covered yesterday, the running back dead zone was still alive last year.
I would still prefer to follow historical trends rather than recency, especially given the significant impact of injuries over the past two seasons.
I am still accounting for the belief that WR1 production has gotten more condensed in the current offensive landscape, but I do want to see the WR2 group stay healthy.
If they do and still flame out, then there will be grounds to fully scrap things, but for now, I am keeping a pin in the historic trends.
I do believe that the strength of the position this year is in the WR15-WR30 range, which we will cover next week in the draft plans.
When you get to the WR3 and WR4 sections of the draft versus their running back counterparts, we start to see the running backs begin to match their positional ADP more than the wideouts.
The running backs also produce a higher rate of RB2 seasons than those wideouts churn out WR2 seasons.
WR3 picks do have an edge in producing WR1 scoring seasons than the RB3 picks do producing RB1 scoring seasons.
Still, when you factor in that baseline running back scoring is arguably the least helpful thing you can have in your fantasy lineup, that safety net loses a bit of its appeal.
When reaching the WR4 level of drafts, things start to pivot back toward running backs in hit-rate areas despite lagging in overall points per game and games missed.
This entire section ties up how I most often approach drafting, although there is no shortage of ways to win a league.
I prefer to land front-end running backs, and then hammer pass catchers.
Unfortunately, that is where the majority of the field is also playing this summer.
Are Discounted WR1s Valuable?
One thing that gamers do in drafts when selecting a wide receiver in the middle-to-late portions of drafts is say, “I am getting the WR1 on his team.”
Is there merit to that?
In our ADP sample since 2010, there have been 193 wide receivers who were the WR1 selected on their team and were also outside of the top 24 in ADP at the position.
Only 39.9% of those wideouts matched or bested their ADP.
Among that same group, 22 players turned in a WR1 scoring season (11.4%), and just 24.4% finished the season as a WR2 or better.
While that is not flattering overall, those are better rates than non-WR1 picks.
Those non-WR1 picks have had a 19.8% hit rate as top-24 picks and a 5.3% hit rate as top-12 picks.
There is obviously a larger bias in sample size there.
When looking at top-24 scoring seasons coming from non-top-24 picks, 33.6% of those have been produced by team WR1 options.
Those WR1 picks also account for 47.8% of the top-12 scoring seasons coming from wideouts selected outside of the top-24 picks.
Chris Olave, Zay Flowers, Tetairoa McMillan, Stefon Diggs, and Michael Pittman were in this group a year ago of WR1 picks (per ADP) selected outside of the top 24 picks at the position who ended the year as top-24 scorers.
This season, the team WR1 picks are going in the WR3 range or later: DJ Moore, Mike Evans, Carnell Tate, Christian Watson, Marvin Harrison Jr, Brian Thomas Jr, Alec Pierce, and KC Concepcion.
The pivot question is: How do we identify the hits?
Draft Early-Career Arcs & New Environments
Sticking with the theme of finding wideouts who turn in productive seasons for less draft capital, we have 140 seasons in which a receiver finished as a top-24 scorer despite being a lower pick.
That is an average of 8.8 per season, which is significant since it is over one-third of the field.
Those players have 66 top-12 scoring seasons, 4.1 per season (25% of the field).
53.5% of those have come from players on their rookie contract.
45% have been players in Years 1, 2, or 3 of their career.
33.6% have been from players in their first or second season.
Last season, there were 11 players who were top-24 scorers selected outside of that range.
Only Jaylen Waddle, Michael Pittman, and Stefon Diggs were not on their rookie contracts from that pool.
One of the prevailing themes throughout this series has been targeting players on the front end of their career arcs if you are hunting for players to out-kick their draft cost.
Looking at wideouts that have been selected outside of the top 24 (WR2 range in drafts) based on year in the league, here are the hit rates for those receivers beating their ADP, and the rates on WR1, WR2, and WR3 seasons.

There are some interesting things to touch on here.
If you have read anything from me over the years, you are already aware that I like grabbing players early in their careers to beat ADP and break out.
Rookie wideouts with limited expectations (with an ADP outside of the top 24) are not as strong as Year 2 and Year 3 receivers across the board.
This year, rookie wideouts are cheaper than ever.
We do not have any rookie wideouts being selected in the top 24.
Carnell Tate (WR29), Jordyn Tyson (WR37), and Makai Lemon (WR40) are the only top 48 rookie picks.
KC Concepcion (WR51), Omar Cooper (WR59), and Denzel Boston (WR60) are next in line, and I would bet on De’Zhaun Stribling (WR64) jumping that trio, or at least Cooper.
Antonio Williams (WR72), Zachariah Branch (WR79), and Ja’Kobi Lane (WR78) are intriguing later-round flyers.
Typically, if a year-two player has a depressed ADP, it is because he did not blow up as a rookie.
Gamers are willing to take shots on rookies due to draft hype, but once a player delivers mixed results, gamers have to be smacked in the face with those results before believing that player could still be productive.
Wideouts in their second season sweep the board in hit rates of top-36, top-24, and top-12 scoring campaigns from players on their rookie contracts.
Tetairoa McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and Luther Burden are already top-24 picks, but this is why Jayden Higgins (WR53) and Matthew Golden (WR47) stand out as undervalued.
Cheaper Year 3 wideouts are not as stable in producing WR3 and WR2 scoring seasons as Year 2 wideouts, but they have produced a slightly higher rate of ceiling seasons.
Zay Flowers, Michael Wilson, and Quentin Johnston were year-three hits last year, and I am not counting Rashee Rice since his ADP was influenced by his suspension.
Josh Downs and Kayshon Boutte also bested their ADP as Year 3 receivers.
You notice a dip in Year 4 wideouts, which inherently makes sense under the hood.
These are primarily players on the tail end of their rookie contracts.
If you have not performed through three years in the league, it is hard to climb out of that hole if the environment has remained static.
When you look at the big Year 4 hits last year, they were George Pickens, Chris Olave, Alec Pierce, and Wan’Dale Robinson.
All of those players underwent significant environmental changes last year, while their prior production was still treated as static.
Josh Downs, Jayden Reed, and Quentin Johnston all qualify for more potential upside based on the changes in their situation compared to a year ago.
That ties into why it also makes sense that we do see a spike among Year 5 wideouts.
Year 5 is almost always aligned with second contracts, which bring new offensive environments.
Alec Pierce, Wan’Dale Robinson, Romeo Doubs, Rashid Shaheed, and Jalen Nailor are players under that umbrella, while I would say that Christian Watson has a different opportunity this season than previous years.
If you really want to take a flyer, Jahan Dotson and Jalen Tolbert also fit that mold.
The new offensive environment, regardless of tenure, is something I do want to close on, but I have one note regarding tenure.
Remember that the sample size decreases significantly for players as you move into later tenure in the league.
Young players are given the opportunity to fail, and second- and third-contract values in the league decrease as tenure increases.
Last season, 241 wide receivers played at least 1 snap on offense.
118 of those were on their rookie contracts.
Only 29 were in the league for eight years or more.
If you are still playing for eight years in, odds are you are a proven contributor or have been at some point in your career.
We, as fantasy analysts and players, understand that most successful fantasy seasons come from players who have already been successful at some point.
Sometimes, however, we discount a player too much for age or recent performance (sometimes a combination of both).
Looking at the table above, players who have been in the league for several years are lumped together due to the reduced sample size of their individual years, but the hit rates there are solid for low-cost players.
Every season, there are a handful of players who the community seems to be out on, but they come back from the grave.
We have had some great hits in this area from experienced receivers (at least 7 years in) being drafted as WR3 or lower-priced.
Davante Adams, Courtland Sutton, Deebo Samuel, Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs, and Jakobi Meyers all beat their ADP last year.
One thing a lot of those veteran hits last year had was a quarterback change.
Sutton was the only player who was with the same quarterback as the previous season.
This year, DJ Moore and Mike Evans overlap with our discounted team-WR1 bucket and have new offensive environments.
There is also discounted pricing on Chris Godwin, Deebo Samuel, and Stefon Diggs.
Circling back to the better values in drafts, they also overlap with attachment to new passers.
If you are not taking swings on discounted players in their first three seasons in the league, you should be looking for players with a change in quarterback attachment.
We have 46 WR1-scoring seasons in the sample since 2010 in which a receiver was selected as a WR3 or lower.
Five were from rookies.
Of the remaining 41 seasons, 27 of them were seasons in which a new full-time quarterback.
Moore and Evans stand out here again, fitting that criteria.
Pittman, Doubs, and Samuel are lower-end picks fitting that mold.
So, putting together all we have covered in this section, let’s run down the 11 wideouts who finished last season as a WR2 or better at a lower draft cost.
- George Pickens (rookie contract on a new team)
- Chris Olave (rookie contract with new play caller and quarterback)
- Zay Flowers (rookie contract)
- Michael Wilson (rookie contract with opportunity to spike through injuries)
- Tetairoa McMillan (rookie)

- Jaylen Waddle (opportunity spike through injury to Tyreek Hill)
That list is nearly a direct overlap with the things we want to hunt for when selecting WR3-or-later receivers across our sample since 2010.
What to Know:
- We have been bad at setting up the WR market for the past two seasons.
- Wide receiver scoring is down through the current offensive and defensive meta, but the top of the position has also been battered via an increase in injuries.
- Despite that, high-scoring players at the position still largely come from high-end draft capital. You still have to pay to play when chasing high scorers.
- WR3s are more volatile than RB3s but offer higher scoring ceilings and more baseline points per game.
- Selecting team WR1 options outside of the top 24 has had a higher hit rate compared to team WR2 or later picks.
- When value hunting at the position, target players on their rookie contracts, especially in Years 1-3 of their career.
- When drafting WR3 or later receivers who are not rookie contract players, emphasize players with a change in offensive environment.
