Jets vs. Bears Fantasy Quarterback Preview

Geno Smith

Geno understood the assignment last week.

Chasing points in Detroit, he completed 31 of 37 (83.8%) passes for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns on his way to a QB3 (26 points) scoring week.

Smith poured on the points in the fourth quarter (14.2 of his points), going 15 of 17 for 156 yards with 2 touchdowns in the final quarter.

He did lose a fumble that ended the game and a push for more points, but gamers got what they wanted overall, and then some.

Smith is another spot where the Jets need to score, although the overall shootout appeal isn't as strong, making him more of a floor-based QB2 this week.

There is still upside, though, so if you were streaming Smith for Justin Herbert or Drake Maye last week, I believe you can roll with him again this week.

Chicago has not been bad the past two weeks.

Granted, they played Carson Wentz in the rain in Week 2, but they also did not let Jalen Hurts (6.1 Y/A) punch up on Monday night.

The Bears are now 12th in passing points allowed per pass attempt (0.384) and fifth in completion rate (59.5%) allowed.

Smith should elevate that completion percentage compared to the teams they've faced so far.

And the Bears are still allowing 7.8 yards per pass attempt (24th) and 13.1 yards per completion (29th).

Part of why we really liked Geno last week was Detroit's aggressive defense.

The Bears fit that mold too, so there will be chances to make plays.

Chicago is playing Cover 1 on 30% of their snaps, second in the league.

They are blitzing at a 40.8% rate, fifth in the league.

When blitzed, Smith has completed 79.2% (19 of 24) of his passes (2nd) for 10.3 Y/A (3rd) with a touchdown.

When the Lions blitzed him on Sunday, Smith was 5 of 5 for 76 yards.

Regardless of man or zone, the Bears play single-high coverage 65.7% of the time, the league's fourth-highest rate.

Against those looks so far, Smith has completed a league-high 88.6% of his passes (39 of 44) for 10.5 Y/A (2nd) with 2 touchdowns.

Tyson Bagent

We will follow Bagent's status this week, but I expect him to start Sunday.

Case Keenum did his part against the Eagles, but Bagent has been the backup quarterback, and I expect him to resume as he clears concussion protocol.

Ben Johnson said after the game that they will discuss the starter this week, but also said in the same quote that “there was a reason why Tyson in training camp is our No. 2 quarterback”.

Should things change, reevaluate here.

As good as Keenum was, he did have a 5.3% turnover-worthy play rate (10th highest in Week 3) but got away with a few rolls of the dice.

But if anything, Keenum's Monday night performance should give us added confidence in Johnson and this offense.

Aside from the Week 2 rain game against the Vikings, this offense was electric in Week 1 and solid in Week 3.

They put up 27 points against the Eagles on Monday and punted only twice.

Bagent made four starts as a rookie in 2023, completing 65.7% of his passes, but for only 6.0 Y/A and throwing 6 interceptions.

I don't want to dock him too much because he was an undrafted rookie thrown into the fire, and that was before Johnson arrived.

Bagent has only thrown 15 passes in live action over the past three years.

You are still using Bagent more as a QB2 than going guns blazing, since this is a strong streaming week, but we just saw Keenum log 17.9 passing points (QB13) in Week 3.

The Jets are still a defense with question marks.

They didn't let Tennessee and Green Bay punch above their weight in the first two weeks, but they failed their first real test on Sunday, giving up 381 yards and 31 points in Detroit.

Jared Goff completed 78.1% of his passes for 8.4 yards per pass attempt on Sunday.

The Jets are 28th in pressure rate (31.5%) despite blitzing at the ninth-highest rate (32.7%).
