Week 5 Review
Christian Watson turned 8 targets into 147 receiving yards to lead all wide receivers in receiving yards in Week 5.
Watson was the first wide receiver to win the weekly receiving yardage who did not reach 10 targets, but it should be noted that his winning yardage was 35 yards less than the next lowest total to win a week.
Watson finished the week with 25.8% of the Packers' targets and 56.3% of air yards, as his deep route rate has more than doubled over the past two weeks.
Receiving Yards Leader Betting Strategy
The NFL weekly receiving yards leader is harder to predict than the rushing leaders because more pass catchers can produce a spike game in any given week.
Spike rushing usage is easier to predict using game script, but spike receiving games have higher variance.
Last season, 10 of the weekly receiving leaders were on the winning team compared to eight on the losing team, a stark contrast to rushing.
Trailing teams tend to increase passing, which makes the pool of potential leaders much larger and increases the odds that longshots hit.
The consistent theme is that volume matters.
Every wide weekly receiving leader had at least 9 targets and 7 receptions, with the average winner getting 11.8 targets and 9.1 receptions.
Target share, expected passing volume, defensive tendencies, and big-play potential can help narrow the massive player pool into a smaller group with legitimate 150-plus-yard upside.
Variance is high when chasing most receiving yards because more players can lead each week, so chasing volume in condensed target trees is critical.
In the opening five weeks, all but one leading receiver has reached double-digit targets (Christian Watson), and all of them eclipsed 100 air yards.
Chris Olave, Davante Adams, and CeeDee Lamb exceeded 200 air yards.
Week 6 Shortlist
Identifying a receiver who has the potential to reach double-digit targets, combined with efficiency, is critical.
Players who stick out to me are similar to previous weeks and include Garrett Wilson, Michael Wilson, Brock Bowers, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, and Malik Nabers.
Most Week 6 Receiving Yards Prediction (Sunday): Brock Bowers (+1500)
Bowers is a transcendent player at the tight end position.
Given the injury issues that he is dealing with, his start to the season has been incredible.
Bowers has accumulated 10 or more targets in all three games and is averaging 104 receiving yards per game.
In the three games he has played, Bowers has 30.4% of the team's targets and a 35.3% air-yard share.
The Buffalo Bills are allowing 60 yards per game to opposing tight ends but haven't faced a difficult schedule outside of Sam LaPorta.
LaPorta caught 6 of 7 targets and scored a touchdown in that matchup.
The entire passing offense is built on creating opportunities for Bowers, and the Raiders defense is likely to have trouble stopping the Bills offense.
The Raiders will have to lean on the pass, so double-digit receptions is in the range of outcomes.
Rich Hribar's Worksheet highlights that the Bills have faced only 9 tight end targets from the slot and out wide, allowing 7 catches for 95 yards as Bowers creates a matchup nightmare for a secondary with injuries at the nickel cornerback position.
Week 6 Receiving Yards Longshot Bet: Nico Collins Receiving Ladders
- Nico Collins Over 71.5 Receiving Yards (-110)
- Nico Collins 90+ Receiving Yards (+168)
- Nico Collins 100+ Receiving Yards (+233)
- Nico Collins 130+ Receiving Yards (+610)
- Nico Collins 150+ Receiving Yards (+1160)
A nice Sunday morning sweat before the regular slate of games starts.
Collins would be a candidate for most receiving yards if this game were included in the market.
In games Collins has played, he has 26.0% of the team's targets and 37.4% of the air yards.
Two weeks ago, this article highlighted Ja'Marr Chase against the Jaguars.
Unfortunately, he took a dirty headshot.
As a result, Tee Higgins finished the game with 157 receiving yards.
The Jaguars' secondary has allowed big games to primary receivers dating back to last year, including 100-yard receiving games to Nico Collins in both matchups last season.
The Texans' passing offense is on a better trajectory this season, and this is a favorable matchup for Collins.
