Finding the Best Number

The margins in sports betting are razor-thin, so finding the best number is of the utmost importance.

That is especially true in the NFL, where key numbers matter more than in any other sport.

Around 15% of NFL games end in a 3-point margin, which means the difference between -2.5 or -3.5 and -3 is massive.

Unsurprisingly, 7 is the second-most important key number, though the new extra point rule has adjusted things a little bit.

In addition to more missed extra points, teams are going for two more often after touchdowns.

From 2015 to 2025, teams went for two after 9% of touchdowns league-wide.

The ten years before that, the rate was 4.4%.

As a result, 6-point, 8-point, and even 5-point margins have become more prominent.
