Week 6 Review

The good news in Week 6 was the fact that C.J. Stroud cleared the 300-yard passing ladder in the longshot selection.

The bad news is the quarterback I selected for the most passing yards managed 4.8 yards per pass attempt.

Kirk Cousins turned a trailing game script and 41 attempts into 313 passing yards against a porous Bills secondary, which earned him honors as the Weekly Passing Leader.

Week 6 provided sufficient evidence that game state matters for passing volume.

The Raiders trailed for the final 44 minutes against the Bills, forcing Klint Kubiak to pass 37 times in the final three quarters after the Raiders had 4 attempts in the first quarter.

Passing Yards Leader Betting Strategy

Back-and-forth games that go down to the final couple of minutes see peak aggressiveness from both teams for ceiling results.

Trailing teams are also forced to pass more.

However, if the lead is large enough, the opposing team hinders the peak passing total by slowing the game down with rushing and running out the clock.

Last season, the weekly passing leader averaged 375.4 passing yards, with totals ranging from 300 to 474.

In 2025, 10 of the weekly passing leaders were on the winning team.

More importantly, eight of those were by one score or less.

Passing volume is driven by game state working in the opposite direction of rushing, but a competitive back-and-forth game provides a runway for the highest passing ceiling.

In 2025, there were six quarterbacks who had 400-yard passing games.

Five of the six ended up losing the game.

A team that trails early abandons the run, which provides value to quarterbacks who are projected for fewer passing yards.

Week 7 Shortlist

The Saints-Steelers game is excluded from this market.

Not many games stand out in terms of shootout appeal, but eight of the 10 games in this window are lined within 4.5 points or less.

Bo Nix jumps out as an option since the Broncos get a friendly matchup after facing a gauntlet of opposing defenses.

Nobody will be more disappointed than Rich Hribar if we do not get a matchup between Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, as those teams have the offensive ingredients for a shootout.

An intriguing game is the Panthers-Buccaneers matchup with the return of Baker Mayfield, as it has shootout potential.

The most exciting game of the week involves the Packers and Lions indoors, but I am hesitant to trust Matt LaFleur to continue to pass at a high rate above expected with the return of Josh Jacobs.

Most Week 7 Passing Yards Prediction (Sunday): Bo Nix (+3000)

Do I have strong conviction Bo Nix will pass for the most yards on Sunday?

No.

However, I think this is a perfect spot to buy low on Nix and the Denver Broncos, which means there is value in this number.

Through six weeks, the Broncos have had the second-most difficult schedule of opponents and the third-most difficult schedule of opposing pass defenses, and yet they are 4-2.

Nix's superpower, if he has one, is his ability to look like a functional starting quarterback against poor competition.

Nix has not shown the ability to be a difference maker in a positive way against elite defenses, but he has shown out very well against weaker defenses.

The Arizona defense is not good, despite what occurred against the Rams last week, and will be by far the easiest unit Nix has faced to date.

The Cardinals are last in yards per pass attempt allowed, and Nix and Sean Payton can pick their poison in terms of how to attack this defense through the air.

The Cardinals defense ranks 30th in EPA per pass on passes behind the line of scrimmage, 28th on short passes, 22nd on intermediate passes, and 30th on deep passes.

This is the perfect spot to build some confidence for Nix after Ryan Fitzpatrick had a legendary rant following the Thursday Night Football win that called out the Broncos quarterback.

The one drawback of a ceiling game is that the Cardinals may not be able to keep this game competitive, and Nix may not have enough volume.

The Cardinals face the third-fewest pass attempts per game this season.

However, this also provides an opportunity to build some confidence for Nix and keep the foot on the gas even if the Broncos build a large lead.

It won't be shocking if this is Nix's most productive game of the season given the opposing defense and the conscious effort to get Nix in a positive mindset.

Week 7 Passing Yards Longshot Bet: Bryce Young Passing Ladders

  • Bryce Young Over 22.5 Passing Completions (-106)
  • Bryce Young Over 25.5 Passing Completions (+249)
  • Bryce Young Over 29.5 Passing Completions (+900)

In his first nine starts last season, Bryce Young had 1,514 passing yards.

He has surpassed that total in five games this season.

Young is averaging 309.8 passing yards per game on 40.2 attempts as the Panthers have gone from one end of the spectrum to the other in terms of passing rate.

The Panthers have jumped from 30th in pass rate over expected to second, despite no major offensive additions outside of Darren Waller, one of the largest philosophical changes in recent history.

The Panthers have a divisional matchup against the Buccaneers, a pass-funnel defense which has excelled against the run.

As noted in Rich Hribar's Worksheet, the Buccaneers are allowing a 66.5% completion rate, which ranks 27th league-wide.

In his two matchups against Todd Bowles last season, Young completed 65.5 and 68.5% of his passes, well above his season average completion rate.

Given the success the Panthers have had leaning on Young, this appears to be a great spot for passing volume, which is boosted by the return of Baker Mayfield on the other side of this matchup.
