What is Success Rate?

Success Rate measures whether a play accomplishes the desired goal based on down and distance.

For offense, a successful play:

  • Gains at least 45% of the required yards on first down
  • Gains at least 60% of the required yards on second down
  • Gains at least 100% of the required yards on third or fourth down

For defense, we look at whether they allowed a successful play.

The lower the success rate allowed, the better.

What is Expected Points Added (EPA)?

Expected Points Added (EPA) measures how much a play changed the team's expected score.

It is measured by taking a team's expected points before a play, based on down, distance, and field position, and comparing that to the expected points after the play.

A 4-yard run on third and 2 earns a first down, increasing the likelihood of a score on that possession.

A 4-yard run on third and 6 brings up fourth down, decreasing the likelihood of a score on that possession.
