  • J.K. Dobbins has played a total of nine games since the year 2020 and is coming back from yet another serious injury, but he was first among qualifying running backs in yards per carry (6.0), sixth in explosive run rate (14.9%), and 14th in negative run rate (13.4%) in 2020.
  • Gus Edwards averaged 4.9 yards per carry during his six seasons in Baltimore with a solid 11.6% explosive run rate and an elite 11.4% negative run rate.

2023 Chargers Stats (NFL Rank):

  • Points: 346 (21st)
  • Total Offense: 5,599 (18th)
  • Plays: 1,106 (8th)
  • Yards Per Play: 5.1 (19th)

  • Points Per Drive: 1.78 (22nd)
  • Situation Neutral Pace: 27 (4th)

2024 Chargers Coaching Staff:

  • Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh
  • Offensive Coordinator: Greg Roman

We know exactly what this offense will want to do with Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman running the show.

When Harbaugh and Roman were together in San Francisco from 2011-2014, the 49ers were 30th in the NFL in dropback rate (54.0%) and 31st in passing plays per game (30.7).

Even when Harbaugh had an elite quarterback prospect in Andrew Luck at Stanford, he only threw the ball 27.1 times per game.

Look at where Roman’s offenses have ranked in rushing yardage over his 10 seasons as an offensive coordinator:

  • 2011 49ers: 8th total rushing, 9th in RB rushing
  • 2012 49ers: 4th total rushing, 9th in RB rushing
  • 2013 49ers: 3rd total rushing, 11th in RB rushing
  • 2014 49ers: 4th total rushing, 17th in RB rushing
  • 2015 Bills: 1st total rushing, 4th in RB rushing
  • 2016 Bills: 1st total rushing, 2nd in RB rushing
  • 2019 Ravens: 1st total rushing, 3rd in RB rushing
  • 2020 Ravens: 1st total rushing, 6th in RB rushing
  • 2021 Ravens: 3rd total rushing, 25th in RB rushing
  • 2022 Ravens: 2nd total rushing, 11th in RB rushing

The Chargers further illuminated their plans by spending their first-round pick on likely right tackle Joe Alt when receiver appeared to be a bigger need.

Game script and the prevailing nature of NFL offenses could get in the way, but when they are allowed to play to their game plan, the Chargers are going to run the football.
