  • Patrick Mahomes set career-low marks in EPA per play, success rate, yards per attempt, touchdown rate, and interception rate last season.
  • Over the final 10 games of last season, Rashee Rice gained 2.59 yards per route run, ran a route on 69.4% of the team dropbacks, and earned a 23.9% target share.
  • After running a route on just 20.4% of the team dropbacks as a rookie in 2022, Isiah Pacheco climbed up to a 37.3% rate last season.

2023 Chiefs Stats (NFL Rank):

  • Points: 371 (15th)
  • Total Offense: 5,972 (9th)
  • Plays: 1,080 (15th)
  • Yards Per Play: 5.5 (9th)
  • Offensive TDs: 37 (15th)
  • Points Per Drive: 1.99 (10th)
  • Situation Neutral Pace: 27.8 (9th)

2024 Chiefs Coaching Staff:

  • Head Coach: Andy Reid
  • Offensive Coordinator: Matt Nagy

A solid top-10 finish in both yards per play and points per drive would be reason for excitement with a lot of NFL offenses.

That is not the case for the Chiefs, who are coming off their worst season on offense since Patrick Mahomes took over.

Mahomes set career-low marks in EPA per play, success rate, yards per attempt, touchdown rate, and interception rate last season.

Despite all that, the Chiefs were still a top-10 offense and won their second Super Bowl in a row. First-world problems, indeed.

A factor in their offensive struggles was an inability to create big plays.

Mahomes set a new career low with just 6.5 air yards per target, and he was 18th among 32 qualified quarterbacks in explosive throw rate.

The offense as a whole was 14th in explosive play rate.

Again, those numbers are not awful, but they are not what we have come to expect from the Chiefs, who led the league in explosive play rate in 2022 even with Mahomes throwing the ball more around the line of scrimmage than early in his career.

The Chiefs brought in Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown to help add that deep threat element to the passing game.

More importantly, Andy Reid and Mahomes are two of the best to ever do it.

We will likely see a bounce back for this offense in 2024.
